Keeping Your Restaurant Kitchen Clean and Safe

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

A busy restaurant is a joy, and a challenge. It’s wonderful that you have so much business and that your patrons love your food. But keeping the kitchen in great condition on a daily basis can seem like an almost impossible task, but it’s of vital importance to pass those Health Department inspections!

So much is going on during the day, hot grease spitting, utensils loaded with food dropped on the floor, glasses breaking, and food being burned or ruined due to human error. A regular cleaning system can help keep a handle on the mayhem, and keep your restaurant kitchen clean and safe.

It is vital to maintain a hygienic commercial kitchen. Your grills should be brushed between cooking different types of meat, such as red meats, poultry, and fish. The line and prep areas should be regularly wiped down, and trash should be emptied BEFORE it overflows. Slipping and tripping in the kitchen could lead to a disaster. Make sure your sanitizing water is maintained and that there is always a sufficient supply of cleaning rags throughout all shifts.

At the end of the day, the fryers will need to be thoroughly cleaned, as will the grills and the steam table, all slicers, floor mats, and surfaces. Grease traps need to be emptied and cleaned, and hood filters should be run through the dishwasher. Sweeping and mopping the floors, including cooking areas and walk-in fridges and freezers, and cleaning all floor mats well will set the kitchen up for success for the next business day. Your work space in your kitchen will be clean and safe!

Weekly you will want to sanitize coolers and coffee machines, clean ovens and floor drains well, and sharpen all knives. Clean and well-cared for tools and machinery will keep your kitchen safe for your staff. These tasks can be part of servers’ side work, to ensure that they get done.

Monthly you should see that thermometers and ovens are calibrated, freezers deep-cleaned, and behind all ovens, stoves, and fryers gets deep-cleaned as well, as grease build-up is a major fire hazard. Keep your first aid kit well-stocked in case of accidents.

At least once a year, schedule a visit from a professional cleaning company you trust. They can clean hoods and drains, grease traps, walls and floors, much more thoroughly than your staff, and can inspect your premises for possible kitchen safety and fire issues.

SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville is ready to help in the area of restaurant kitchen safety and cleanliness. Give us a call today at (615) 454 9215 or visit our website:

Keeping Your Drapes Odor Free

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Dirty draperies can make the entire room smell dingy and look unattractive. No one wants to deal with unpleasant odors; cleaning and deodorizing your drapes regularly can go a long way to making a space fresh, pleasant, and appealing.

Just removing your drapes from the curtain rod and putting them into your washing machine can be very effective if they are made of cotton or polyester blends, but some textiles, such as velvet, silk, taffeta, chenille, and brocade, simply can’t be safely cleaned by that method. These types draperies will have to be dry cleaned, as well as sheers and those that are insulated or lined. The care of a professional might be needed to remove spots and unsightly stains, as well.

Before you undertake this project, take a look at the care instructions for your draperies, usually located on a tag inside. These instructions will let you know how the material should be cared for, with specifics as to water temperature, the type of cleaning solutions that will be safe, and what the dryer setting will need to be. It might even be necessary to air dry them.

Over time, drapes will collect dust and grime just from hanging in a room. They will collect odors as well, and the smell can affect the entire room. A proper cleaning, whether DIY or professional, with restore your rooms to their normal sweet, odor-free state.

If you decide to do it yourself, you will want to start with a good vacuuming! It’s not necessary to take them down if you can reach them properly. After the vacuum cleaning, a hand-held steamer will work nicely to give them a fresh look and scent. Before steaming, you will want to be sure that the cleaning instructions don’t advise against it. Those that can be machine washed will be taken down and washed and dried; make sure you remove them from the dryer immediately to alleviate wrinkles.

After your draperies have been cleaned and re-hung, you can lightly spray them with linen spray, if their care allows. This will add a lovely scent to the room, and definitely deodorize them to keep any bad odors from hanging around.

SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville has years of experience in helping Nashville residents keep their homes and businesses safe and clean! From water damage to mold prevention, fire safety and clean-up and more - they are the ones to call at (615) 454 9215! Or visit their website:

A SAFE, CLEAN NASHVILLE CONCERT VENUE

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

Here in Music City we can probably boast more concert venues per capita than any other city in America, and perhaps the world. People come from every country imaginable, all year round, to hear what Nashville musicians have to say. Nashville is on so many Top Ten travel lists these days, it’s hard to keep track. And people just keep on coming.

As a venue owner here in Music City, you want to keep your space presentable at all times, ready for anything. Some shows can happen at a moment’s notice, if a band or musician rolls into town and decides to play at the last minute. You won’t want to miss any opportunities here in It City!

All these visitors in and out of your venue day after day, year after year, can cause you a lot of wear and tear. It’s a good idea to find a commercial cleaning company that can come in and clean your business and inspect for water damage, mold damage, and fire safety, all while keeping your venue fresh and clean, deodorized and ready for company!

Your seating holds a lot of people, and over time odors can grow, Refreshing and deodorizing your chairs and any other seating available in your concert venue can help to keep your business fresh and attractive.

How is your flooring holding up? Have you sustained any damage or issues from recent storms or flooding? Damaged flooring can be the cause of accidents and mishaps, which no business owner wants. It’s a good idea to get all your damp troubles taken care of right away, so that mold doesn’t have a chance to cause you a headache. Keeping Your Belle Meade Business Clean in Winter

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

The winter months pose a big challenge to keeping your Belle Meade business clean and dry. Snow and ice from winter storms can affect your floors, windows, parking areas, and roofs, while the cold and sickness will affect how your staff feels, slowing down their ability to be productive. Take the steps today to avoid water damage, mold damage, and lost productivity.

Flu and the common cold are a big problem during the winter months. Cleaning and disinfecting your office equipment regularly is of the utmost importance in preventing the spread of germs, especially when it comes to those items handled daily by your staff, such as phones and keyboards, countertops, tables, and doorknobs. Commercial cleaning services can get the job done for you with eco-friendly products that will leave your office odor-free, while at the same time alleviating any concern about harmful chemicals lingering in your office atmosphere. Keeping viral and bacterial germs under control prevents sickness and reduces the loss of productivity due to employee sick days.

Wet floors can pose safety hazards for both your customers and your staff. Having your bare floors mopped and dried and carpets vacuumed on a regular basis will help to avoid accidents and mishaps. It will  also keep air moisture levels down, which can help greatly prevent mold growth! A cleaning service can shampoo carpets or polish floors after business hours. They can also share best practices with you on how to keep your floors hazard-free and looking good during the day, and can advise you on how to best guard your business from mold and water damage.

Window washing services during the winter months are something you won’t want to neglect; your windows suffer due to those frequent storms. Dirty windows are cloudy, reducing the amount of sunlight allowed into your office and customer spaces. Natural light boosts the moods of both your employees and customers, helping to promote healthy productivity and activity levels. A boost of bright sunlight from the windows can breathe new life into your workspaces during the gloomy winter months, and lighten everyone’s mood. Sunlight also helps to dry any slick, wet floors and helps to keep excess moisture under control. Moisture Left unattended is a breeding ground for mold, which no one wants to see. Maintaining the cleanliness of your windows during the winter months will lighten the mood and make a good impression on your customers, and keep your work spaces healthful and mold and odor free.

The team at SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville is here to help with all of your commercial cleaning, water damage, fire damage, and mold clean-up needs in 2018. Give us a call at (865) 690-9658 and let us help you get off to a clean start this year! Our website is http://www.SERVPRObellemeadewestnashville.com/

Deodorizing your Nashville Airbnb

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

So you’ve decided to jump on the AirBnB bandwagon. You have the space - it’s perfect, really. You’ve updated the shades and lamps, added a small fridge, and gotten all new bedding. Now it’s time to start renting!

Or is it?

You’ve started this business to make money, of course. And money in this industry means traffic. Hopefully, lots of it. But you are going to have groups of strangers in and out of your living spaces all hours of the day or night, from many different parts of the world, with all different types of lifestyles. Which means….odors. If you have a small kitchen in your unit, that presents another odor issue; some types of food when cooked can leave behind strong smells, and sometimes they can be extremely unpleasant.

The first thing a new guest will notice when they step into your AirBnB is odor. It may look really great, but if it smells bad, you might just lose a customer, and they might write a bad review...and then what?

So before you take in your first guest, lay out a plan for deodorizing your space.

Air fresheners are a good idea, such as plug-ins. And refreshing your carpet with baking soda or a dry carpet cleaner with a great scent will really help, too. Many of these products are made with ingredients that fight against mold and mold-damage, which is one of the things that creates bad odors.

If you plan on  having guests during the times of the year when it can get wet, such as spring or winter, you will have to keep an eye out for water damage and damp in your unit ,caused by leaks and foot traffic. If carpets stay damp, mold sets in, and your AirBnB can get pretty musty with that moldy smell! It won’t make a great impression on your guests, that’s for sure.

During warmer weather, leaving doors and windows open between guests can really help the odor issue. Sunshine is a great deodorizer for many unpleasant smells.

One of the best ways to keep your AirBnB smelling great and looking amazing is to hire a professional cleaning company to come in and do the job. They can de-odorize your carpets and draperies, check for mold or water damage, and if mold has started to grow and spread they can stop it in its tracks.

How Often Should You Replace Your Cleaning Supplies?

1/19/2018 (Permalink)

No matter what the size of your house, office location, or school is, keeping it clean is an absolute priority. Though having the right cleaning supplies is imperative to ensure a clean living space, they too need to be replaced in time. Unfortunately, knowing when to replace said items is easier said than done. We here at SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville have some cleaning tips for you that will let you know when to replace certain cleaning supplies and how it can benefit your work space.

Understanding Why It’s Important to Replace

Before diving into any other information, it’s important to first understand why we should be replacing cleaning products. Over time, bacteria can build up on mops, sponges, and other cleaning tools that we use often. It can get to the point to where the bacteria is offsetting the actual cleaning process. It’s imperative to use this information to ensure that bacteria is not spread around your living space.

Replacing Mop Heads

Of any cleansing product on the market, mops can collect more bacteria than any other cleaning item due to its size. Mops sit in water for long periods of time and retain water even after rinsing. This can create a bacteria rich environment, one that can be detrimental to your health. The standard replacement time for mops is two to three months after first using one.

Do I need to Replace Chemical Solutions?

While this doesn’t cause any concern for sanitation reasons, chemicals themselves should be replaced over time. Check the expiration date on the container of the cleaning solution, as these products break down over time, decreasing their cleaning potency.

Sponges

Sponges see more action daily due to cleaning dirty dishes, among other surfaces in the house. Because of this, sponges collect a lot of bacteria at an alarming rate. This can be detrimental to your health and should be replaced weekly to ensure that germs aren’t building up over time in your sink.

Vacuum Filter

If you’re using your vacuum on the daily, the filter inside of the machine can most certainly wear thin over time. If completely worn down, dust and bacteria can escape into the area, causing a multitude of problems. While they don’t need replacement often, you should do your best to replace the filter every six months or so. Not only will this stop dust from spreading in the air, but it will help with the odor removal process in your carpet too.

4 Alternatives to Air Fresheners to Deodorize Your Home

1/5/2018 (Permalink)

Nothing is more off-putting than a foul smelling home!

After taking the trash outside, flushing the toilet, and washing smelly clothes, and still odor lingers. Instead of eliminating the odor, air fresheners cover it up, which can worsen the problem. SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville offers a few alternatives to tackle bad smells. We also offer deodorization services that eliminate odors while still being eco-friendly and budget-friendly.

Open Windows

While it's easier to open a window during the spring and summer than fall and winter, a window relies on the outside air to eliminate odors inside the house. A good wind creates necessary ventilation that your air conditioner and your lungs will appreciate. During warmer winter days, open the window for a few hours and let the chilly breeze circulate throughout the house. The more windows that are open, the better the circulation.

Baking Soda

This powerful deodorizer doesn't associate with only refrigerators. Baking soda works in deodorizing the entire home or apartment too, yet the deodorization process is different. You can pour soda in trash cans, vacuum bags, and sink drains. Buy several boxes and place each box in a different part of the house. You can also combine baking soda with other ingredients to make air fresheners and oil diffusers.

Potpourri

Store bought or homemade, potpourri is a great deodorization method. In the store, smell different potpourri for the best scents before buying. Homemade potpourri consists of dried flowers, dried fruit, pine-cones, herbs, spices, and wood shavings. Both versions release an incredible, pleasant aroma. Odors naturally fade away after coming in contact with potpourri.

Simmer Scents

Create homemade deodorization scents on the cooking range. Find a spare saucepan and fill it with water. When the water is simmering, add preferred spices and/or fruits. Possible ingredients are cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, lemon slices, vanilla, orange slices, cranberry, rosemary, mint, basil, and apple slices. Take one to three ingredients listed and experiment. The aroma fills the room and neutralizes odors with ease.

Nashville residents think of air fresheners when they think of eliminating odor. SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville knows there are easier, safer, and environmentally friendly deodorization methods. Baking soda and simply opening windows are great solutions.  Potpourri and scent simmering rely on fresh, natural, and good-smelling ingredients to deodorize homes. All are worth a try.

Tips On Removing Pet Stains From Carpet Quickly

12/29/2017 (Permalink)

Even the best trained pets can still have accidents!

When you think of SERVPRO of Belle Meade and West Nashville, you probably know that we are experts when it comes to fire and water damage. But did you know that we can also help with less catastrophic messes, like the kinds your pet leaves behind?

That’s right, if you’re in the West Nashville area, SERVPRO of Belle Meade and West Nashville can help with carpet cleaning and deodorization. We’re experts at odor removal and have been trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors that come from inside and outside your home.

Maybe you have a pet odor cleaning job that doesn’t rise to the level of needing professional help, though. SERVPRO of Belle Meade and West Nashville has you covered in that case, too. Here are a couple of easy, inexpensive solutions to pet stains and odors that only require a few products you probably already have in your home.

For urine stains that are still wet, blot the excess dampness with paper towels – the sooner after the mess is made, the better. Once you’ve absorbed as much excess as you can, mix a solution of 2 cups vinegar, 2 cups warm water and 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Use a spray bottle to spray directly onto the stain. Let it sit for five or ten minutes and then use more paper towels to dry.

You can use the baking soda and vinegar method with heavier or older stains, too. Instead of lightly spraying, you’ll first want to pour just enough vinegar to soak the stain directly onto the carpet, followed by a small amount of baking soda. Make sure you apply vinegar first, then baking soda. Cover the area with a bowl (to prevent your pet from walking in it or ingesting it – then you’ll have an even bigger mess) and let it sit and dry completely for a day. Uncover, sweep, then vacuum and your pet’s bad stain should just be a bad memory.

For cleaning and deodorization jobs that will take more than vinegar and baking soda to get rid of, call SERVPRO of Belle Meade and West Nashville to learn how we can help fix all of your pet odor removal problems.

Deep Cleaning Your Mattress

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your mattress as clean and inviting as possible!

Deep Cleaning Your Mattress

When it comes to our mattresses, we hardly think about cleaning them. Sure, we may spend some time washing the sheets when they start to smell, but most people at home hardly pay attention to the mattress itself. Dead skin cells and sweat can accumulate inside of the mattress, making it a toxic cesspool of germs over its regular lifespan.

Fortunately, at SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville we have some solutions for you to use when it comes to deep cleaning your mattress. Not only will these techniques help with the deodorization process, but it will help improve your mattress’ lifespan. Here are the tips that can help deep clean that mattress in no time!

First Step: Supplies

Before we begin to go over the cleaning process, you first need to buy some cleaning supplies to make this work. 16 ounces of baking soda, essential oils and a standard vacuum cleaner will do. Nothing too fancy here, right?

Step Two: Rotate the Mattress

Now that we’ve got our supplies, rotate the mattress on its backside. You should be doing this every six months or so anyway, but for now we’re going to be cleaning both sides of the mattress. Distribute your favorite essential oils over both sides of the mattress. This will help with odor removal process, but won’t quite remove the germs itself.

Step Three: Apply Baking Soda

Take your 16-ounce box of baking soda and use the entire package on both sides of the mattress. Mix it in with the essential oils, scrubbing deep to ensure that it gets into the mattress. Give it about an hour or so to set in. During this time, clean the areas around the mattress, like the walls or underneath while you wait! Best to get everything in one clean sweep!

Step Four: Vacuuming

After an hour has passed, plug in your vacuum cleaner, and let it do its magic! Make sure to vacuum on both sides, and be careful not to leave any lingering amounts of baking soda behind. After you have deep cleaned your mattress, you’ll be sleeping much better at night!

Tips for Cleaning Your Vacuum Cleaner

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Even our cleaning supplies need to be cleaned on occasion!

Our vacuum cleaners take a toll quickly. Almost every family out there uses their vacuum cleaner frequently, but often don’t maintain it well enough. This can be bad for both the machine and your household. By not cleaning your vacuum cleaner, dust and other nasty things can get into the air. SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville has some tips you can use to clean your vacuum cleaner that will prolong its life cycle.

Make Sure to Replace the Bag

Most vacuum cleaners use a disposable bag to collect dust and other nasty items it picks up from the ground. A lot of people forget to replace this important item, and the dust will sit in the bag while the vacuum cleaner is not in use. This can lead to dust and other nasty particles to seep out of the bag and into the air while the vacuum isn’t in use. Make sure to replace this to avoid anything getting out into the air.

Ensure That the Container/Bag is Attached

One of the biggest hazards of vacuum cleaner usage is not sealing the container or disposable bag tightly enough. What ends up happening is dust and debris will get sucked up into the vacuum cleaner and blown back out into the air. Make sure that these items are attached tightly, otherwise you could be undoing all the cleaning you’re trying to do!

Cleaning the Brush Roller

The “teeth” of the vacuum cleaner is where most of the work is done, and oftentimes items can get stuck down there. Take some time every so often to clean the teeth, and remove any debris that may be lodged. This will ensure that the belt is running optimally, and can prevent it from breaking if there’s a snag in the teeth.

Making sure to vacuum your home regularly is a great way to remove any pollen or dust that can build up in the carpet. With these tips I’ve mentioned, your vacuum cleaner will run much longer and more efficiently. With proper maintenance, you can get the most out of your machines!

Tips for Storing Seasonal Clothes

12/6/2017 (Permalink)

Make room for the new season in your closets!

Sweaters, coats, and parkas, oh my! Winter clothing takes up a lot of room, and your closets may be bulging. Since we live in Nashville and enjoy four real seasons, we have the luxury of packing away seasonal clothing for part of the year and making more room in our closets. Follow these tips for seasonal storage before tossing clothes into cardboard boxes.

Start with a purge. Donate or recycle any items you have not worn during the past year. Clothing needs room for air circulation to minimize the growth of mold, so having less in a closet is better for your clothes. You can also better see what articles of clothing you have when they hang neatly and separately instead of in a packed mass.

Some items should never be packed and stored. Delicate fabrics, handmade quilts, and treasured heirlooms need the consistency of a temperature controlled environment to preserve and prolong their lifespans.

Once you know what you want to store, wash and dry it. Cleaning and deodorization help remove traces of organic material that can attract pests. It also minimizes the risk of mold and its unpleasant odor.

If you are storing items in a garage or other area that is not humidity and temperature controlled, use plastic sealable bins. Rodents can chew through cardboard and nest, so protect your clothes in plastic.

To pack a bin, place heavier clothes, like jeans, in the bottom, and stack lighter clothing to the top. Rolling clothes, instead of folding can minimize wrinkles. Skip mothballs. They may have been used by your great-granny, but their disadvantages outweigh their benefits.

Label the container so you can swap clothing with the changing seasons. Safely stow bins in your garage or a storage unit.

Once a year, have all carpets, including that in closets, deep cleaned. Use a professional service like SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville. Set aside one day when your summer clothes are packed and ready to store, and you have not yet unpacked last year’s winter gear, to clean carpets and drapes throughout the home.

Cleaning Your Artificial Christmas Tree

11/21/2017 (Permalink)

It's time to get your tree ready for the Christmas season!

As the holiday season rolls around, it's likely that you'll be pulling your artificial Christmas tree out of storage. About 70 percent of Americans will celebrate Christmas this year, and of those who celebrate the holiday, only about 20 percent of trees are real! Many people recognize the benefits that come with artificial Christmas trees; namely, reliability, easiness, and attractive looks.

After eleven months in storage, however, many artificial Christmas trees both look and smell a little dusty. No matter how well you try to keep the dust out, it always finds a way in. Here are some tips for cleaning an artificial tree to keep it looking as good as the day you bought it.

Dust

One of the foremost necessities in cleaning an artificial Christmas tree is to remove any dust clinging to its branches and needles. Using a static cling cloth, gently wipe it along the branches. The static will pick up loose dust and stop your tree looking drab.

Shake with Salt

If your tree needs something a bit more intensive, salt can actually help! This is a method that is effective for small trees or larger trees that come apart into smaller pieces. Add small trees or tree pieces to a large bag with a handful or two of Kosher salt, then vigorously shake. The salt will act as an abrasive cleaner, scrubbing away any grime that's clinging on tightly.

A Seasonal Sponge Bath

For heavy cleaning, a light dusting won't be enough. At the start of every season, carefully wipe each branch down with a gentle, wet sponge. This will pick up the dust and dirt that settled between the needles while the tree was in storage. Sponging a tree, especially a larger one, can be time-consuming, so plan to tackle this at short intervals or enlist the help of others.

Deodorization

After your tree is clean, you'll still need to deodorize it periodically. You can hide a scented air freshener intended for a car in the branches of your tree to give it a seasonal scent, or periodically spritz the branches with an air freshener to keep them smelling fresh.

Professional Services

Sometimes, home cleaning just doesn't cut it. For more extensive cleaning services around your home, SERVPRO of Belle Meade/West Nashville is locally owned and operated in Nashville, Tennessee, and has expert solutions to keep every part of your house clean.

Garbage Disposal Deodorization and Cleaning Services

11/16/2017 (Permalink)

Your garbage disposal doesn't need to smell of garbage!

A dirty garbage disposal can be a serious inconvenience. It can also make your kitchen and home smell less than fresh. The good news is that cleaning a garbage disposal on your own doesn't have to be hard. You can rely on citrus fruits to freshen up your garbage disposal. Don't simply throw away grapefruit, orange, lime or lemon peels. Put a peel or two inside of your garbage disposal. Put a little water down the drain and switch the disposal on. Voila! You're on track to a garbage disposal that no longer smells like your worst nightmare.

Take advantage of vinegar and baking soda. There's a good chance you have those things at home already. Shake a little baking soda down into your garbage disposal. Put a cup of vinegar down into it as well. Give the two ingredients the opportunity to froth and foam. Let the blend stay for anywhere between five and 10 minutes total. Afterward, use hot water to clean everything out!

Ice cubes can also come in handy for garbage disposal cleaning purposes. Put several ice cubes into the disposal. Switch the water on. Keep it on for anywhere between one and two minutes. This can make a great option for people who want to deal with garbage disposal clogs that are causing awful smells in the home. Ice cubes can rid the blades of stubborn and persistent food remnants of all kinds. Doing away with pieces of food can cut odors in a significant way.

Do you have a garbage disposal that's so dirty that it actually needs professional deodorization and cleaning help? Call SERVPRO of Belle Meade/West Nashville. We cater to clients located all throughout the Nashville, Tennessee area. If you want your Nashville home to smell as lovely as possible, our in-depth deodorization service can help in a big way. Using Essential Oils for Green Cleaning

11/9/2017 (Permalink)

Essential oils are a great way to tackle some cleaning projects!

Using Essential Oils for Green Cleaning

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant-derived oils. These oils are extracted from plants and contain the natural scent and property of the plant which they derive from. Essential oils are frequently diffused into the air for aromatherapy, and can also be used in cleaning. Because they are solely plant-derived, they are 100 percent all natural and contain many beneficial properties.

How to Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are strong, so it is important to use them correctly. They should never be applied topically or ingested, as they can cause adverse reactions and irritation.

There are many different ways to clean with essential oils, but one of the most popular and versatile methods is to create an all-natural spray. In an eight-ounce bottle, combine 4 ounces of water, 4 ounces distilled white vinegar, and 12 to 24 drops of your preferred essential oil (or use a mix). For tougher jobs, adjust the recipe and use a 2:1 ratio of vinegar to water.

Together, vinegar and essential oils are a powerful combination that creates an environment where microorganisms have difficulty growing. Depending on the essential oil(s) you choose, your all-natural spray will have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal qualities. Essential oils are also deodorizing due to their strong scents.

Below are some of the most popular essential oil choices.

Lemon

Known for its bright, fresh scent, lemon is a popular choice for aromatherapy, as it has been shown to lift people's mood. It is also one of the most effective choices for surface cleansing. Creating Your Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Cleaning Schedules

11/1/2017 (Permalink)

Use these schedules to keep your house and business in sparkling clean condition!

Keeping your home clean is an ongoing battle, but it's also very rewarding to sit back on the couch and look around to see a spotless environment. When your home is clean, it's like a burden is lifted and you're able to focus on more important things in your life. And the same is true of keeping your office or workplace clean as well. Here are some recommendations for keeping your home clean on a consistent basis.

Daily Tasks Around the House

The key to having a clean home and keeping it clean is to do a little bit every day. Things like picking up those bits of food that fall on the kitchen floor and wiping up those puddles that form around the faucets can go a long way to reduce the need for deep cleaning later on. Many children will be able to clean up after themselves by putting dirty clothes in the hamper, picking up their toys and putting their dirty dishes in the sink. They'll need a reminder from time to time, but once they get in the habit – and as they see you modeling the same behavior yourself – they'll start forming good daily habits.

Bedrooms and Living Room

  • Wash dirty laundry
  • Make the beds
  • Straighten up the floor

Bathrooms and Kitchen

  • Wash the dishes
  • Wipe down kitchen sink and countertops
  • Take out the kitchen trash
  • Wipe down bathroom countertops

Things to Clean Once Per Week

Now, some of the items below might only need to be cleaned every other week, depending on how quickly dust builds up in your home. And if you have a robot vacuum, you can have it come out every day or every other day if you prefer. Just be sure to tidy up the floors daily to keep items from getting sucked up into your vacuum.

Carpet cleaning and deodorization are really easy to keep up. Just sprinkle some baking soda and let it sit for half an hour before you vacuum. If you haven't done this in ages, then shoot for an hour for the first few weeks to achieve a deeper level of odor removal, especially if you have pets.

Bedrooms and Living Room

  • Dust ceiling fans and lamps
  • Clean mirrors
  • Dust items on bookshelves
  • Deodorize and vacuum carpets

Bathrooms and Kitchen

  • Clean microwave and toaster interiors
  • Clean mirrors
  • Disinfect countertops and sinks
  • Clean toilet inside and out
  • Spray and clean shower walls, tubs, and faucets
  • Sweep and mop hard flooring

Things to Clean Once a Month

The monthly tasks and those that are done even less frequently are the ones that put you into deep cleaning mode. The first couple times you perform these tasks might require a lot of work, but once a high level of cleanliness in your home is achieved, it becomes much easier through your daily and weekly cleanups.

Bedrooms and Living Room

  • Vacuum lampshades, drapes, and blinds
  • Vacuum couch cushions and chairs
  • Dust air vents

Bathrooms and Kitchen

  • Clean refrigerator interior
  • Clean oven interior
  • Clean top of refrigerator and kitchen cabinets
  • Clean air vents

Get That New Car Smell Back in Your Car

10/25/2017 (Permalink)

Your car can smell "fresh off the lot" all year long with these tips!

One the great pleasures of buying a new car is the scent. Like many other Nashville area residents, we love how a new car smells when we get into it. At SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville, many company clients want to discover how to keep that new car smell each time they start to drive. Fortunately, we've found there are a lot of ways to help keep any car smelling wonderful for as long as you own it. Doing so can help make it even more fun to drive and even help increase the retail value of the car should you decide to sell it later. Keeping the car's interior in good shape is important as is making sure that you use odor removal services should the smell you like go away.

Keep the Air Fresh

If you, like us, do a lot of driving, you want to keep the air in your car as fresh as possible. Fresh air helps you concentrate on the road at all times. It also helps your passengers feel better. On a hot Nashville day, fresh air in your car can be particularly important so you don't get overheated or dehydrated. An air freshener can also help. Look for air fresheners that have new car scent to them.

Clean Often

Once you buy a new car, you get busy. Sometimes, you forget to clean it. In that case, it can help to clean at least once a week. Take some time early in the morning and look closely at the car. It's a very good idea to remove any papers from the dashboard if you don't need them as well as removing any unwanted items from the truck. Periodic cleaning helps our clients maintain that new car smell much longer. They also find it helps to vacuum the interior of the car to get rid of any particles of food that may have fallen to the floor when they are not looking.

Remove any Odors

Remove any odors as soon as possible can help make sure the new car still smells good. Many clients find periodic deodorization is ideal. Lots of things can cause odors in the car. For example, rain can get inside the car and create a different smell. Try to get rid of any odor as soon as you notice it.

If your DIY efforts are not successful, give us a call and we will handle your deodorization needs!

Odor Remedies for Home or Work

10/5/2017 (Permalink)

Keeping bad odors away will make your office more productive!

Odors have a big effect on the human brain. As you know, being around unpleasant smells can even diminish the enjoyment of your own home. Odors are an even bigger problem in professional work-spaces where they can scare off clients or make employees less productive. Whether you are dealing with an odor problem at home or at work, these solutions can help you to deal with your problem.

Check Unexpected Places

Even the busiest clean freaks can end up with gross smells because odors can hide in unusual areas. A stinky kitchen could be caused by a clogged drain in a dishwasher, mold buildup behind a baseboard, or food debris underneath a cushion. The first step in deodorization will be to find the source of the smell and remove it.

Clear Drains With Vinegar

Vinegar is a natural and effective way of dealing with odors caused by plumbing issues. After clearing up any clogs, pour a half cup of apple cider or white vinegar down a drain to kill odor-causing bacteria. You can also run your dishwasher and washing machine with a quarter cup of vinegar to kill smells in these appliances.

Neutralize Odors Trapped in Fabric With Baking Soda

This tip works for carpet, upholstery, mattresses, and other fabric covered areas that have absorbed unpleasant odors. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the area, let it sit overnight, and vacuum it up in the morning to deal with lingering smells.

Clean Hard Surfaces With Homemade Deodorizing Solutions

Even hard surfaces like tile, plastic, metal, and wood can have nasty odors sitting on top of them. These overlooked surfaces can actually be the reason your work or home is still smelly. Fill a spray bottle with a diluted mixture of vinegar and citrus essential oils, spray it on the surface, and then wipe up the surface with a rag. This will make your home smell strong for a few hours, but the odors will disappear along with the vinegar scent.

Talk to the Professionals

If do-it-yourself remedies are not working, it might be time to get some help from deodorization experts. At SERVPRO of Belle Meade, we have the equipment needed to find and remove anything that could be causing unpleasant odors. Our cleaning and odor removal professionals can get rid of nasty scents linking in carpet, floors, air ducts, walls, and other areas of your Nashville home or business.

4 Tips to Keep Your Garbage Can from Smelling like Garbage

9/27/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your kitchen smelling as clean as it looks!

Although it might seem like a lost cause, it is possible to keep your garbage can from smelling like garbage. Of course, if your garbage can doesn't have an odor, then the spaces around it are less likely to smell. We doubt you want your home to smell like garbage, so SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville would like to offer some suggestions to stay odor-free.

Bag it

The easiest way to keep a garbage can smelling fresh is to seal up the garbage and keep it well away from sensitive noses. Since most garbage doesn't smell bad until it starts to decompose, a kitchen garbage can with a lid is a great choice for kitchen waste. A foot-operated lid can provide an added measure of hygiene and safety. You can open the lid while cooking without dirtying your hands (or the lid). When the bag fills, you seal it up and place it in your outside garbage can. It's important to remember to seal the bag and place bags in the can.

Freshen it

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, garbage cans can start to smell. From sprinkle-in powders to adhesive deodorant stick-ons, many products are available to deodorize garbage cans. Some are as simple as fragrances to mask garbage smell with a variety of more pleasant smells. Some products offer more advanced composition and actively neutralize unpleasant odors rather than mask them. If budget is a concern, or you prefer to keep things simple, then it doesn't get much simpler than sprinkling some baking soda in your garbage can to absorb odors.

Keep it clean

When you do wind up with loose garbage in the can, smells can linger. After emptying your can, does it still smell? If it does, then cleaning it might not be a bad idea. Since much of the smell comes from decomposition and the bacteria involved, use a disinfectant or diluted bleach solution when cleaning your trashcan.

Seek professional help

When odor removal simply becomes too much of a task, don't hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville to discuss professional deodorization. If your garbage smell has spread to some other part of the kitchen or bathroom that you just can’t seem to be able to find and eliminate, help is available.

3 Tips for a Safer, Cleaner Attic in Nashville

8/31/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your attic safe and clean with these 3 tips!

At SERVPRO of Belle Meade, we see a lot of emergency situations, like fires, that could have been prevented. One of the most common areas for this is the attic. Homeowners often neglect the attic because it is generally a storage area. We never go up there unless we are looking for something specific. Small issues in the attic can become household emergencies if we are not careful!

The attic is one of the most exposed areas of your home when it comes to the elements. Because of this, you want to do everything you can to keep it clean and insulated. Heat and moisture can wreak havoc on an already messy crawl space. An improperly insulated one is a welcome home for pests like rodents and insects. Here are some tips you can use to keep your home safe.

  1. Use Good Storage Units - Nashville summers can get extremely hot. Because of this, you want to use containers that can appropriately protect their contents from extreme heat. In some instances, cardboard boxes are don't handle heat well, let alone the contents inside of them. This is why so many people use large plastic or rubber bins that seal to store items in their attics. This keeps things safer and more organized.
  1. Lighting - You might be surprised at the effect that proper lighting can have on your cleaning. Most attics are poorly lit, meaning you aren't getting every bit of dust or debris up from all the dark corners. This adds up over time and can be a problem if you don't address it. Try installing a few extra lights up there. You might be surprised at what you see and how much more often you want to be up there.
  1. Get Rid of Stuff - Let's face it. You probably have a lot of stuff up there that you haven't seen in years. One a year, get rid of everything you haven't used since the last time you cleaned. You will be surprised at how much clutter you have and getting rid of it will go a long way towards helping you organize it.

These three tips will take you a long way towards having a clean, organized and safe storage area. A clean and organized area is less likely to be a problem during a fire. It also gives you a lot more space to work with when it comes to storage.

Restaurants enjoy a thorough cleaning of the floors, drapes, blinds, carpeting, and upholstery. Food smells can become trapped in fabrics leaving a sour or greasy smell. SERVPRO of Belle Meade has specialty cleaning services to ensure your restaurant gets deep cleaned.

Deodorization

We have several different deodorizing formulas created to get to the source of the bad smells. Odor removal is not just about hiding or covering up offending smells, but it’s essential to go to the root of the problem and neutralize it.

Inspect for mold

Mold is one thing that not only leaves a musty odor, but it has a negative impact on your health. That’s why it’s so important to determine if mold is the culprit and, if so, to begin action right away to combat it. We have tools and equipment that help us determine if there is a mold problem. It doesn’t take much for mold to develop and then spread. If you suspect mold, we will discover the source and work to isolate, then eliminate it.

At SERVPRO of Belle Meade, we make cleaning and restoration our expertise. We train and educate our staff to combat stinky smells wherever they may be. If you have a restaurant that does not smell too sweet, contact us today.

3 Great Car Cleaning Techniques

8/24/2017 (Permalink)

Follow these tips to keep your car shining!

SERVPRO of Belle Meade would like to offer Nashville car owners, a few tips about maintaining their vehicle. Certainly, the average driver makes a substantial investment in their vehicle and would like to preserve its beauty for a long time. In addition, a well-maintained vehicle has a higher resale value. All drivers should take this into consideration. Maintaining and cleaning the vehicle is all a part of ownership. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to clean a vehicle. In this piece are 3 great car cleaning techniques that will keep your car well maintained, well into the future.

  1. Window Cleaning

Cleaning the windows and windshield on a vehicle is considered an easy task. Simply grab a window cleaner and shine the windows. However, it's important to realize that some cleansers might harm the windows and windshield. Here is a tip. Avoid any ammonia based window cleaners. Ammonia based cleaners will damage your tinted windows. The ammonia based cleaners will also ruin leather, vinyl, and the rubber inside of your vehicle. Select a no ammonia based cleaner. Roll windows down an inch or two. Spray cleaner generously on the window. Wipe and go over the top of the window. Roll up and clean the bottom edge.

  1. Inside

It's important to keep the inside of your vehicle clean too. A vacuum with attachments is the best for keeping the inside of the vehicle clean. Vacuum the interior with a crevice tool. Use this tool on the seats, around the dashboard, on the doors, and the floors. Forget about purchasing overpriced cleansers for upholstery. Instead, apply a mild solution of soapy, warm water to stains and rinse to remove any remaining soapy residue.

  1. Outside

Avoid washing your vehicle in the sun because this will add spots to the vehicle and ruin the finish. Instead, wash the vehicle in the shade. Start the process by rinsing off the car for a few minutes to remove grime and dirt from the road. Use your favorite exterior cleaner to complete the process. Rinse off rims and tires, let dry naturally. Use a commercial cleaner to remove any tough spots on the tires or rims.

Four Tips to Make Grill Cleaning a Breeze

7/20/2017 (Permalink)

Someone has to clean up after all the delicious food is eaten!

If you're a Nashville local, you know how gorgeous the weather can be in the summer. Our beautiful blue skies and high temps always inspire a barbecue. After you grill, watch some TV and catch up with your pals, then, it's time to clean up.

It's a job that nobody likes to do, but it has to be done. A grill that's mired in excessive grit and soot can become a hazard and could lead to fire damage on your property.

If you're already trying to deal with extensive fire damage, don't panic, because SERVPRO of Belle Meade's got your back. With 24/7 emergency service and highly trained technicians on call, SERVPRO can respond faster to any size disaster.

It's a hassle to get your grill back in top shape, but with these four tips for grill cleaning, you'll have a spotless grill in no time.

  1. Follow Proper Safety Procedures

Always make sure to follow proper safety procedures! This is true whether you're looking to spot clean after you've grilled food or you're gunning for a more in-depth, thorough cleaning.

Ensure that each of the knobs is OFF. Next, you are using propane, make sure the tank is closed. Following that, check that the grill is on a stable, even surface; and that the grill is no longer hot before you touch any of its individual parts without protection.

  1. Invest in a Good Grill Brush

Your grill brush is an important tool that you don't want to skimp out on.

What makes a great grill brush? You'll want a brush that has smaller bristles and multiple heads. Also, a long handle so that you can scrub while the gratings are still hot, and one that's durable. You'll also want to make sure that whatever brush you pick up is a good match for the size and type of grill that you're using.

  1. Burn Off Excess Food and Grease

It's never a bad idea to crank the grill up to its highest setting after you're done the cooking so that it can burn off excess grime. This can make your post-barbecue spot clean easier.

  1. Keep the Grill's Exterior Clean

Ensuring that the exterior of the grill is spotless is as important as maintaining the cleanliness of its interior. It's an easier job than the inside, though; all you'll need is soapy water and a rag.

Removing Pet Smells From Your House or Car

6/30/2017 (Permalink)

We love pets, but not always their smells!

Dog and cat owners know that animal care is a big responsibility. Unfortunately, a large part of pet ownership is cleaning the messes that the animals make. However, even the most vigilant owner can have difficulty keeping animal odors at bay. The odor removal specialists at SERVPRO of Belle Meade can address pet smells at the source. We love helping animal owners keep their home and car fresh and clean.

Sources of Animal Odors

Airborne particles from animal urine, feces, vomit, hair, and dander can all contribute to malodorous smells because these substances cling to carpet fibers and other fabric. Plus, urine can soak through the carpet, padding, and subfloor. Urine can even penetrate baseboards and drywall. Also, animal hair and dander can accumulate within a home's air ducts, which ramps up the bad odor each time the owner turns on the heater or air conditioner.

Locating the Sources

Animals tend to urinate and defecate in the same areas. To make animal odors disappear, it is crucial to find the odor's sources. Professional odor removal companies do not rely on the naked eye alone. Instead, they use a black light to highlight the areas that animals have soiled. Once all sources are located, the specialists can begin working on the removing animal odors from the home.

Treating the Areas

The techniques and tools that an odor removal technician uses depend on several factors, including the substance that handles the odor and the material that needs treatment. After thoroughly cleaning and deodorizing all affected areas, the technician will seal the surface of these areas to prevent airborne particles from creating unpleasant odors.

In more severe cases, the technician may need to clean the air ducts or use our special proprietary process. To clean air ducts, the technician will use a powerful vacuum that dislodges and removes dirt, hair, and dander from the ducts. The proprietary process may also be used to rid the area of organic pollutants in the air.

The animal odor and mold removal specialists at SERVPRO of Belle Meade are certified and experienced at finding and eliminating all unpleasant smells from homes and cars. Those who are ready to get control over pet odor and make their home an inviting place once again should contact SERVPRO today.

Spring Cleaning the Garage: Get the Smell Out

Keep your garage a safe haven with the cleaning tips!

Spring Cleaning the Garage: Get the Smell Out

Your car, tools, furniture, and all sorts of things can go in your garage, but if there’s a stink to it, even entering the room can be unpleasant. Fortunately deodorizing the area is relatively simple, so long as you tackle the sources of the smells and keep the area clean. Find out some useful tips below.

  • Remove scent catchers. This means removing wet and old cardboard, papers, and the like. Water, in particular, can contribute to mold growth and musty odors in general, so it’s best not to leave any of these materials lying around if you can help it.
  • Soak up spills. When oil and other strong-smelling liquids are left to sit, they can make many places unpleasant and unsanitary. You can sprinkle some cat litter on the offending spots to absorb the liquids for easy disposal, or you can proceed to the actual cleaning.
  • Clean! You may go the route of an all-purpose cleaner or a bleach and water solution for tougher areas, but now is simply the time to give the area a thorough cleaning. Pay attention to where smells are coming from so that can eliminate all sources. Smaller spaces like garbage cans will also need to be scrubbed if they’re adding to the odor.
  • Follow up. Though the garage is clean, you still need to keep up the cleanliness. Ventilate it with fresh air for several hours, if not a day, and watch for moisture and temperatures inside. Consider a ceiling fan, especially if you keep pungent chemicals constantly inside. As for keeping the smell away with deodorizers, air fresheners might only be enough to mask scents. Placing deodorants like vinegar, cat litter, or baking soda in controlled amounts can keep the stench away for good.

You probably don’t want any part of your home to stink every time you step inside, and the garage is no different. It isn’t too difficult to aerate and freshen up, so long as you can identify sources and take care of the mess. A little effort will render the room just as clean as pleasant as the others.

If you need professional help, you can call on businesses like SERVPRO of Belle Meade in Nashville to help with the load. Not every odor can be removed quickly and easily on your own, and SERVPRO professionals have the experience and 24/7 access to expedite the process. They'll remove odors at the source and get your home back to normal in no time.

6/17/2017 (Permalink)

We can eliminate odors in any room!

It’s time to do a thorough cleaning of your home and as you walk into your child’s room a stench smacks you in the face. You might question what the odor is from, but the main goal is to get rid of the foul smell in the quickest and easiest method available. Odors can originate from all sorts of things including smoke, pet hair, and dander, mildew or mold. Take one or more of these measures to get rid of the smell once and for all!

Vacuum

Never underestimate the power of vacuuming. Vacuum carpets and hardwood floors, paying special attention to areas such as corners and against the wall to ensure you get everything from food crumbs to pet cleaned up. Sprinkle carpet deodorizer on carpets and allow it to absorb into the fibers before vacuuming it up. Use the hose to get rid of dust and debris on furniture such as chairs or couches that may be in the room or the curtains. You can also opt to take them down completely and wash them.

Washing

Wash down surfaces to get rid of dust, spilled food or other traces of odor. Wash down walls and take down your light fixtures to give them a good cleaning. The Nashville heat can make the smells worse than they already are. If water damage from mold or mildew is an issue, you may need to seek services from SERVPRO of Belle Meade for professional remediation.

Open windows

Allow fresh air to come into the room by opening the windows. Consider purchasing an air purifier if quality seems to be an issue. Consider putting a long-term air freshener such as a plug-in or auto sprayer to keep it smelling fresh.

Eliminate unpleasant stenches from your home by being proactive in your cleaning efforts. You’ll get rid of the unpleasant smell that your kid seems to be immune from in no time. If you're having difficulty getting rid of the stubborn smell no matter what you do, you might need to seek outside assistance. SERVPRO of Belle Meade can help with deodorizing any place in your home large or small quickly at a cost that is affordable to you.

Tips to Keep Your Vacation Home Smelling Clean

6/7/2017 (Permalink)

Having a vacation home is a luxury because you can retreat to this spot when you want, and you can also use it as a source of extra income. Imagine, however, that you walk in after some time away to discover a putrid smell. You may also receive a telephone call from renters complaining about the stench. Whether you're spending time there or living at your year-round residence, maintaining a clean smell in your vacation home is imperative.

Use Automatic Air Fresheners

Part of the problem is that you may not get to your vacation home in Nashville enough to evaluate the scent. Therefore, you can set up automatic air fresheners. Models are available that need not be plugged into the wall so you don't have to worry about leaving items in the sockets when you aren't there. While you will need to replace these air fresheners once in awhile, the scent filling the house on a regular basis can create a pleasant aroma.

Hire a Cleaning Service

As long as you are comfortable with having a cleaning team enter the home when you aren't cleaning, you should hire one to come on a regular basis. You may choose to have the service once per week or every other week. If you rent out the house to vacationers, using a clean service is practically a necessity to ensure an enjoyable experience for the travelers.

Handle Major Damage

After a flood, mold may start to accumulate in the house. Even if a flood has not occurred, the property may have issues with mold. Therefore, you can call SERVPRO of Belle Meade to handle the issues. Mold can lead to an unpleasant scent, and it is also bad for health. You should not have to live in a house with mold, and people are unlikely to want to rent a property with mold. SERVOPRO of Belle Meade can also help you to deal with other types of damage and scents, such as those ones left by a fire.

Air It out

While you shouldn't leave the windows open when no one is there, you should open them as soon as you can when you enter the property. A house that hasn't had its windows open in a while can begin to smell and feel stale.

Fortunately, when you learn how to keep your vacation property complete with a clean scent, you can enjoy it even more.

Cleaning and Deodorizing Your Fishing Boat

5/28/2017 (Permalink)

Your boat doesn't need to smell fishy! Clean it like a pro with SERVPRO of Belle Meade!

Marine vessels used for fishing are havens for dirt and bacteria. On the inside, the fish smells linger in the air, and on the outside, mildew and grime cling onto the boat's surface. SERVPRO of Belle Meade has all of the tools needed to clean and deodorize fishing boats; however, those who are willing to do the manual labor can do the cleaning themselves. Review a few tips to get the most out of cleaning and deodorizing your boat.

Choose the Type of Cleaning

The purpose of boat cleaning is to work smarter and not harder. There are more effective methods that don't involve scrubbing over stubborn stains for hours. Hiring professionals are one option that is guaranteed to work every time. Doing the cleaning yourself will save you money, but the results are less effective unless you can afford the high-quality equipment.

Removing Odors Is Possible

Odors are common in boats that are constantly exposed to rotting fish, diesel fuel, and polluted water. A lack of routine cleaning is the reason why the smells are unbearable in some boats. On the exterior, some odors are caused by regular encounters with seaweed, slime and floating debris in the water. Mold and mildew are the reasons why some boats emit strong musty smells.

Odor removal is best performed by professional cleaners. Anti-odor products are made to mask the smells and not remove the sources of contamination. Professional cleaners use pressure washing tools that work better than regular scrub sponges and brushes. They have the special equipment to remove particles that are causing odors.

Don't Underestimate the Results

Many boat owners think that boats should be spotless with no cracks or scratches in sight. In reality, boats spend most of their time in unclean, unstable environments. Sailboats are likely to collide with reefs, whales and other vessels. Likewise, hundreds of fish go in and out of a fishing boat, so getting rid of every last fish residue is not possible. Every fishing boat, whether new or used, depreciates in value the moment that it hits the water.

Look for a Nashville service that understands the dynamics of boat cleaning. For a thorough cleaning, including the additional service of odor removal. Cleaning is the first step before you choose other restoration services, such as parts rebuilding, painting and refinishing. Find the ideal company that works on all types of fishing boats in all conditions.

Tips to Make Your Home Smell Like Spring

5/19/2017 (Permalink)

There is still time to make your home or office smell like spring!

Even though the Nashville sun makes it feel like summer, spring is still here for a few more weeks. This also means you still have time for Spring Cleaning at home and in your office. Both settings can become musky over time due to lots of factors. If you want to make your home smell like spring, there are a few important tips to follow.

Clean the Carpets

Deep clean the carpets to remove grime and dirt that has accumulated in areas of high traffic. You can also spot clean certain parts of the carpet where wine stains or food have spilled. Shake out any rugs that are in the home outside to remove dust and dirt.

Add Extra Plants

Placing plants in different areas of the home will improve air quality and help eliminate scents and odors. Some of the top plants to use include palms, ferns, and peace lilies.

Make Your Own Citrus Spray

Allow your home to smell like fresh fruit with a DIY citrus spray that you can spritz in different rooms throughout the day. The spray will deodorize and disinfect the home to remove smells in the kitchen or dusty scents in rooms that aren't used as frequently. Use four cups of vodka and peels from two oranges with a few drops of orange essential oils in a spray bottle. Consider adding a few sprigs of rosemary or mint.

Use a Diffuser

Diffusers break down essential oils and release them into the air to create a beautiful natural scent. It's also clean and easy to use instead of dealing with melted wax or burns.

Use a Fresh Bouquet of Flowers

Make it a point to put a fresh bouquet of flowers in an entryway. This will brighten up any setting and allow it to smell like spring. The strongest scents will come from flowers that include roses, gardenias, wisteria, jasmine, and lilacs.

Hire Professional Cleaners

Residents in Nashville can hire the professionals at SERVPRO of Belle Meade to perform odor deodorization services. Whether it's water damage or mold, we have the tools to rid your rooms of many odors. Smoke from cigarettes or fire damage won't last after our deodorization techniques. You can keep heads in beds whether you work at a hotel or just cleaning your home. Our cleaning will include using commercial equipment that freshens up the space and improves air quality.

A Clean and Odor-Free Pool

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your pool clean and odor free this summer!

Importance of a Clean Pool

Because pool season is around the corner, many families are beginning to think about cleaning and deodorizing their pool. Most people know that a swimming pool can be home for all types of bacteria, algae, and other unwanted wildlife. Not only are these things not pleasant to have in your pool, they can lead to contamination for those in and around the pool. Cleansing and odor removal of your pool is more important than you might think.

Benefits of Choosing a Cleaning Company

Maintaining a clean swimming pool is harder than you may think. Even if you have the right sized pool filter, it may still be a challenge to get your pool as sanitary as you may want it. Many people choose to use a pool cleaning company to make sure that they have a valid cleansing and odor removal process. A pool cleaning company will not only get the job done, but they will get it done in a timely manner.

Most pool owners are not aware of the knowledge needed to prevent and fix any maintenance problems that may happen with your pool. Companies can check for any problems that may go neglected without a large background in pools. This will end up saving you money in the future in terms of fixing maintenance problems as they come up. Professionals also offer their advice on how to care for the pool before the next time they come back. Their advice is personalized to your specific pool, family, environment, etc.

When professionals come to clean your pool they will also inspect the parts to make sure everything is running the correct way. They will inspect things like the filter, pump, and any other equipment that runs the pool.

Reasons To Clean Your Air Ducts In Summer

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your air ducts clean during the idle months to prevent future problems!

A few months ago. the heater worked on overdrive keeping your house warm from winter's frosty touch. Now, the HVAC will be in use again, this time keeping the home cool from summer's scorching heat. Between winter and summer is spring when the unit often sits idle. Take advantage of the idle time! SERVPRO of Belle Meade in Nashville can clean your vents and have you ready for the next season.

Maximum Use

During winter heating, air ducts collect dust, debris, and smoke in exchange for toasty heat. The dust, debris, pollen, and other unwanted stuff clog the airflow. Cleaning it now means the heating and air conditioning unit will work at its peak when the air conditioning part of the unit comes on this summer. Do you want to turn on the air conditioner and clean it then? Do you want dust, dirt, and debris returning to the home due to overflow? Both answers are no!

Health Concerns

Garbage in, garbage out; the dirt, dust, debris, and smoke clogging the ducts can reach your throat and nose. A thorough cleaning means breathing in fresh air. This creates fewer chances of allergies and asthma symptoms too.

An equally grave health concern is eliminating mold and mildew from the ducts. Mold and mildew spread spores anywhere in places where it has the best chance of growing. Heating and air conditioning units are no exception. Unclean ducts mean mold and mildew affect fresh air entering your home. In turn, homeowners will deal with mold and mildew symptoms. This is avoidable if ducts are clean.

Pest Control

Warm weather in Nashville encourages bugs to build a nest in your home. They come out looking for a place to stay and select your ducts as the primary home. Insects, vermin, roaches, and small animals burrow inside dust, debris, and dirt as a hiding space. If left unattended, the growing hiding space can become an uncontrollable infestation. When it's finally time to clean it, it will become more than anyone bargained for. A clean duct won't have infestations because the ducts are too clean for pests to hide.

Energy Bills

Expect light or energy bills to lower when ducts are clean. A clean duct equals less time to cool the home at the desired temperature. No roadblocks exist so air goes faster without turning up the controls to do so. The unit is off more often, which translates into lower energy bills.

DIY duct cleaning is not the approach to cleaning out air ducts due to health concerns and pests. Now is perfect timing to spring clean the HVAC unit and our professionals are the primary choice to do this. Give us a call today!

4 Hard to Remove Smells in the Garage

4/28/2017 (Permalink)

Smells in your garage difficult to handle? Let SERVPRO of Belle Meade handle it!

The garage is one area where smells can really start to build up. Here are four especially hard to remove smells in the garage. It is likely that you have been in a garage with at least one of these smells before.

  1. Pet Odors: You love the animals in your home. However, you probably don't love the mess that your beloved animals can leave behind. If your pet likes to spend time in the garage, they could be leaving urine and feces there. It can be tough to detect a pet odor problem until it has started to get out of control. Our company provides deodorization solutions so your garage is no longer at the mercy of pet odors.

  1. Mold: A few items in this list are merely unpleasant to deal with. However, mold is extremely dangerous and can grow at a rapid rate. It isn't uncommon for mold to completely take over a home, if measures are not taken. Small amounts of mold within a home are enough to cause illnesses. SERVPRO of Belle Meade specializes in removing harmful mold from your home. Our mold remediation services ensure that this problematic substance is properly handled.

  1. Smoke: Cigarette smoke can certainly be a tricky smell to remove on your own. If someone has or currently smokes cigarettes in a garage, it can really leave behind a smell. Like pet odors, if left untreated cigarette smoke odor becomes tougher to remove easily. Smoking for prolonged times can also cause nicotine to form on walls and surrounding areas. In addition to removing the smoke odor, our company can also clean nicotine stained surfaces.

  1. Chemical Spills: Whether it is cleaning solutions or food waste, spills happen all the time. Spills in the garage often happen when throwing something away. If a chemical solution has spilled, caution is of the utmost importance. In most cases, these chemicals are filled with ingredients that are dangerous to breathe in. Our company can ensure any and all chemicals spills are removed, without you having to breathe in dangerous chemicals.

In conclusion, there are smells that can prove extremely difficult to remove from a home. However, our team of professionals specializes in cleaning and deodorizing garages all around Belle Meade.

Why Does Your Kitchen Sink Smell?

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

That bad smell isn't garbage - it's your sink!

Since your kitchen is probably the main hub of your home, you want it to be clean and smell as fresh as possible. If your sink is putting off a rank smell, there is cause for concern. A smelly kitchen sink may indicate an overload of bacteria. Some of these bacteria may make your family sick from breathing it.

If you live in the Nashville area, SERVPRO of Belle Meade may be the answer to cleaning and refreshing your kitchen sink pipes. Here are some of the main reasons your sink may be grossing out your family:

Bacteria from Food

Some of the offending smells in your sink may be from bacteria that have made a home in the drain pipes. These minuscule invaders get everything they need to live in your kitchen: water, bits of food, and warmth from the stove. The more they thrive, the worse smell you will encounter.

You do not have to be held hostage by these putrid pests. By pouring ½ cup baking soda and 1 cup white vinegar down the drain, it will set off a chemical reaction that will kill the yucky bacteria. All you have to do is rinse the sink and drain with hot water after the treatment. There are also commercial disinfectants on the market for cleaning sink pipes. If these do not work, you may need a professional drain cleaning company.

Garbage Disposal Fallout

One of the handiest contraptions in the kitchen is your garbage disposal. It grinds food waste down to tiny particles that will easily pass through the sewer system. Garbage disposals can put off foul smells when these particles build up and decay on the disposal blades. This can also be the consequences of putting fatty meats and stringy veggies down the machine. A quick fix for a ripe garbage disposal is to grind a few lemon or orange peels down it. The citric acid will naturally cut the clogged up grease and will kill smelly bacteria.

Stopped Up Kitchen Vent

If you have cleaned and refreshed your sink and garbage disposal and still detect a foul stench, you might have a clogged vent. You may not realize that there is a vent that leads from your sink pipes to the roof for ventilation. Sometimes, bacteria and other debris can clog the vent from the outside. A professional drain cleaning company can use a snake brush to clear the debris and get rid of the offending smells.

When your kitchen is free from odors, it will be a joy to cook in again. Just take some precautions and give your garbage disposal, pipes, and vent a good cleaning periodically. Your whole family will thank you!

Bedbugs Invade Nashville and Knoxville!

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

Don't let bedbugs go untreated!

Bedbugs are insects that were almost eradicated, but have unfortunately made a strong comeback. In fact, there was a report from Orkin placing Knoxville and Nashville on the Top 50 Cities with bedbugs list! These pests are difficult to deal with due to their tendency to hide in places that make them hard to spot. They also have the ability to survive for up to a year without any food! So what are these monstrous bugs and how do you deal with their threat?

What Do Bedbugs Look Like?

Adult bedbugs are oval, reddish-brown colored insects that can be up to 5 mm in length. They resemble an apple seed in both size and shape. Before a meal, a bedbug will appear flat, but changes to a swollen shape and takes on a more reddish hue after a meal.

Where Are These Pests Present?

SERVPRO of Belle Meade has treated various types of properties for bedbug infestations. While these pests prefer environments where humans sleep, such as private homes and hotels, they can appear anywhere. This includes retail stores, movie theaters, office buildings, public transportation vehicles, etc.

Are These Insects Deterred by a Clean Environment?

Unlike other common household pests like cockroaches, bedbugs have no interest in any scraps of food lying around a home, as they exclusively feed on blood, preferably that of humans. They have been seen in all kinds of residences, from rundown cabins all the way to luxury villas, as they can live and reproduce in any indoor location where humans congregate, whether it looks like a complete mess or is cleaned several times a day by a janitorial crew.

However, removing clutter can make bed bugs easier to spot and also helps professional pest control technicians ensure that the product they use gets to all places the pests may be hiding in.

How Do You Get Rid of Bed Bugs?

Once an infestation takes hold, getting rid of all the bugs is very difficult and is definitely not a DIY project. If you notice signs of bedbugs in your home or commercial property, you should contact us to schedule a professional treatment. If the infestation is particularly severe, several repeat visits may be necessary to ensure that all of the pests and their eggs have been eliminated.

Odor Eliminators vs. Air Fresheners

4/14/2017 (Permalink)

Know the difference between odor eliminators and "maskers"

SERVPRO of Belle Meade in Nashville can address problematic smells in the home, but it’s important to understand that eliminating them goes beyond spraying a fresh scent. The difference between removing and masking scents can have a big impact on your home when the problem is more than a passing stink.

Odor removal and deodorization targets the source of the smell. Whether it’s from mold, leaks, or whatever might give off a smell around your home. This can be inside or outside, and there can be multiple spots and sources involved. This will often call for special training or equipment if the source is serious. A few home staples like vinegar and baking soda can help, but the more powerful and long-lasting the smell, the more likely you’ll need a professional to tackle the issue. Our team utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to eliminate odor.

Lingering stenches, as described above, are usually indicative of a bigger problem. Masking smells with air freshener could mean missing a dangerous health risk to your home and family. Additionally, air fresheners can’t eliminate the smell. It might make an area smell nicer for a while, but unless the source is removed, air fresheners simply deposit a scent that won’t last. Overpowering the bad smell won’t clean any affected surfaces, either, so it’s better to address whatever is causing the issue.

Air fresheners offer a quick fix when you can’t identify the source of a smell, but they can end up mixing smells instead of eliminating the bad one. There’s usually more to a stench than the odor itself, so careful consideration of the problem can spare you a lot of unpleasant stinking. In short, if the odor is coming from a place like your garbage can or dirty laundry, air fresheners can offer a temporary improvement. However, when the problem is larger, older, or worse, seek out professional removal and deodorization to get rid of the smell for good. SERVPRO of Belle Meade is the choice in Nashville for odor elimination services. Give us a call today!

4 Hard to Remove Smells in Offices

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

No one likes bad office smells! These are some of the worst!

We spend plenty of time in our offices. Some of us spend more time at work than we do at home so we need our offices to smell pleasant. No one wants to work in an office that reeks of garbage or cigarette smoke.

What if your office has a stink that you can't eliminate? Deodorization, the science of removing particularly tricky smells, can help. And the professionals at SERVPRO of Belle Meade are the experts in removing the most persistent of foul smells.

What are the trickiest stinks, the most challenging smells to remove from an office. SERVPRO experts list four smells that can be especially vexing.

Cigarette smoke: Most offices are smoke-free these days. But there might be areas of your office that are still havens for smokers. Maybe the scent of cigarette smoke regularly wafts into the office space from a side entrance popular among the office's smokers.

Ask anyone who's ever tried to sell a home: It can be a true challenge to eliminate the scent of cigarette smoke from furniture, carpeting and walls. Sometimes, only professionals can accomplish this task.

Mold and mildew: Has your office flooded? Then you might be dealing with the twin odors of mold and mildew, the common result of water damage. These smells can make an entire office smell sour. Again, removing these smells from furniture and carpeting can prove challenging without the help of professional cleaning services.

Spoiled food: Office kitchens and lunchrooms are breeding grounds for truly awful smells. Who knows how long that casserole on the bottom shelf has been there? And no one even recognizes what's in that tub shoved against the fridge's back wall.

Most refrigerator smells can be eliminated by tossing spoiled food. But sometimes, refrigerators become breeding grounds for offensive bacteria. In such a case, it's time for the office cleaning staff to tackle a deep-clean of your office kitchen's refrigerator.

The shared bathroom: Does your office have a shared bathroom? Then you can bet it is a source of bad aromas. Often, these odors can be avoided with simple air fresheners and common courtesy on the part of office workers.

But some bathroom smells can't just be sprayed away. If your office bathroom is causing serious smell problems, it might be time to call in a professional deodorization service. Again, there are some smells only a professional can tame.

Deodorizing Cigarette Smoke from Lounges

3/31/2017 (Permalink)

Don't let cigarette smoke linger another day!

Many public places, such as restaurants and stadiums, do not allow smoking for health and safety reasons. Some establishments allow lounges for smokers to use in an enclosed place. The benefit of this in that smokers and non-smokers know exactly where smoking is allowed. However, long after smokers leave, the smoke lingers and can be a nuisance to anyone who walks nearby. To keep both parties happy, schedule deodorization visits from SERVPRO of Belle Meade!

Cleanliness Is Important

Staying clean is a common goal for all business owners. Even in a lounge with only one smoker, people can smell smoke from several yards away. In a room with many smokers who come every day, there are smells that linger long after the visitors leave. SERVPRO of Belle Meade has the tools to remove the odors entirely. Last year, we had the privilege of converting The Gold Rush in Nashville into a non-smoking building! It had allowed smoking for 42 years and we transformed it over night!

Time Management Is Important

Some cleaning methods are more effective than others. It takes time to research your options and find solutions that actually work. You are not given the luxury of time as a working professional. You don't always have the time and energy to research the thousands of deodorizers that exist on the market. We already know what works and will tell you what works during our visit.

Customers Choose Established Names

Preventing Lingering Pet Odor

3/21/2017 (Permalink)

You love your pets, but your house doesn't need to smell like them!

Having pets is a part of life. Having pet odor doesn't have to be. If you love having pets, but can't stand the lingering odors they create, then there are a few things you can do to help eliminate those unwanted odors.

Your carpet can be a big source of lingering odors. Dirt, pet dander, urine, and fecal matter can remain deep inside carpet fibers. Carpet powder only helps deodorize and clean the surface but does little to get in deep. Using a carpet cleaner is more effective but only if you know how to use it correctly. The experts at SERVPRO of Belle Meade know how to deep clean your carpet to get rid of any unwanted odors. Their equipment and expert knowledge on carpet cleaning will get the job done right the first time and provide lasting results.

Odors can also linger within the air duct system of your home too. Cleaning the air ducts is a task that should only be left to the experts. SERVPRO has the right equipment to clean out your air ducts and eliminate those lingering odors. You'll notice the difference the first time you use your HVAC.

Pet odors can also linger within the walls and baseboards of your home. Pet urine can be absorbed by the wooden baseboards or absorbed into the gypsum material of your drywall. Priming and painting may not be enough. SERVPRO has the necessary chemicals to clean and deodorize your walls and baseboards.

Choosing SERVPRO of Belle Meade to help with your home's deodorization is the smart choice. Having a pet doesn't mean you have to live with lingering odors. The expert knowledge and equipment of SERVPRO can eliminate all of your home's odors and make it seem like you never had pets at all.

Tips To Keep Rugs in Great Condition

3/11/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your rugs in great shape with these tips!

Maintaining your home is crucial, but it's also a fantastic idea to maintain all the furnishings inside your home, including your carpeting and flooring. Here is SERVPRO of Belle Meade’s top 10 helpful tips for keeping your rugs and flooring in great condition:

6 Rug Care Cleaning Tips for Nashville Homeowners

1. Vacuum clean each rug at least twice per week to remove dust, loose dirt and debris.
2. If you have pets, sweep the pet hair out of each rug before vacuuming. Pet hair can clog your vacuum cleaner bag, and the vacuum cleaner won't always remove it all.
3. At least once per month, take each small area rug outdoors and shake it out. This helps to keep it clean, and it also will help the fibers in the rug from becoming matted down.
4. When you spill something on a rug, be sure to spot clean it immediately to prevent it from becoming stained. Use only the cleaner recommended by the manufacturer of your rug.
5. Do not ever use bleach on a rug! Bleach can weaken the fibers and ruin the color.
6. Clean each rug professionally at least once per year.

SERVPRO of Belle Meade in Nashville Suggests 4 Rug Care Tips for Preventing Wear and Tear

All the flooring in your home can benefit from these 4 tips to prevent wear and tear:

1. Be sure to use a rug pad to reduce wear and tear on each rug in your home. A rug pad will help each rug to grip the floor better, enabling it to stay in the same spot rather than slipping and sliding around.
2. Rotate each rug periodically, perhaps once every quarter or once every two months. Usually, a rug will start to show wear based on the traffic patterns through your home. Each rug may get worn or dirty in the spots that get significant amounts of foot traffic. Rug rotation will help to prevent this. It will enable the rug to receive a more even amount of wear overall so that the same spot doesn't get worn down.
3. Rearrange your furniture. This will have much the same effect as rug rotation, preventing the same spots in your rug from getting worn down.
4. Encourage friends and family members to remove their shoes before entering your home. This will reduce wear and tear on all your flooring, including your rugs.

Tips for Keeping Your Hot Tub Clean

2/25/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your hot tub clean all year long to enjoy its benefits!

Nothing can compare to stepping into a nice clean hot tub after a long hard day. A good soak is a great way to relax both the mind and body, but you have to keep your tub clean to enjoy the long-term benefits! Here a few tips from SERVPRO of Belle Meade on how to keep your hot tub clean year round:

A Healthy Tub

It is important to keep the tubs as clean as possible to prevent health hazards. The moist environment can be a breeding ground for mold and bacteria growth. These can lead to respiratory and skin problems if not taken care of promptly. A complete cleaning should be done on a regular basis. This includes both the tub itself and the cover. Cracks and crevices in and around spas are notorious for bacteria and mold growth.

Stopping Bacteria

Bacteria in spa tubs usually manifests in the form of slime or strong odors. Improper sanitation is almost always to blame for these conditions. Filmy or cloudy water is also an indicator that the tub is in need of professional help. Be sure clean the inside of the spa and also check the filters, jets, and pipes for any bacterial growth. Sometimes it is what can’t be easily seen that is the problem. Regular cleanings and proper sanitation techniques are recommended to keep bacteria at bay.

How often a spa needs to be cleaned is dependent on a variety of situations. Spas that are used on a regular basis require more cleanings, and the number of different people who use the tub is also a factor. Filters are an essential part of any spa tub and need to be changed often to ensure that the system is filtering out unwanted debris. If the filters become blocked, the pump is forced to work harder, which can lead to a complete power failure.

SERVPRO of Belle Meade wants the people of Nashville to enjoy their tubs in a safe and clean environment. Follow these steps along with the manufacturer's guidelines and you'll be warm and stress-free all year long.

SERVPRO of Belle Meade Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Clean in Winter

Keep your carpet fresh and clean all winter!

SERVPRO of Belle Meade Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Clean in Winter

Are you one of the people that assumes their carpets need less maintenance during winter? Sure, less mud is tracked into the house, but is that all you need to worry about? Unfortunately, even a short and relatively mild winter can still ruin your carpet. The following tips will save you time and money on carpet maintenance this season.

Start by airing out the rooms in your home regularly. It's tempting to close all the windows, turn up the heater, and keep heavy blankets on hand for the chilly days and cold nights! However, your carpets need to be aired regularly to keep them dry and smelling fresh. Try this technique even on days you don't want to leave your cozy bed. Choose the warmest hour of the day and open the windows. Then close the door to that room. This will help the air circulate while keeping cold air contained!

Another great tip is to sprinkle baking soda on your carpet. Afterwards, vacuum the excess powder. This helps to deodorize your carpet and combat humid conditions. As we know, humidity can increase and spread odor-causing bacteria.

Moisture can easily get onto and into your carpets from the humid air, muddy shoes, wet paws or spills of liquid. Have a dry cloth on hand to blot spills as they happen. When moisture sits and builds on a carpet, bacteria is more likely to multiply.

Be frugal and visit appliance stores during holiday sales to buy a durable vacuum cleaner. To simplify cleaning, invest in a vacuum that lifts embedded dirt and leaves your floor dry. Don’t consider this as an excess buy because a top brand vacuum cleaner is invaluable. It is a one-time buy, so consider it an investment.

Buy a small floor rug that doubles as a decorative mat and carpet protector. The obvious solution to dealing with muddy and wet shoe marks is not to bring them inside the house. Visit any home goods store to purchase a an indoor rug with a rough surface. This surface lets you wipe off more particles and moisture from your shoes. If feasible, keep slippers by the rug so your family can switch footwear easily.

If your carpets soak up an excess amount of moisture, such as during a flood, give SERVPRO of Belle Meade a call. Our equipment and training will keep your carpets clean and dry year round!

Don't Bring Mud From Last Year Onto This Year's Carpet!

1/13/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your carpets and rugs clean this year Nashville!

Many New Year's resolutions include plans for making this year better than the last. Perhaps we want to spend more time at the gym for fitness. Maybe reading through the books on your shelf or Kindle is a priority for you. Whichever goal you set for yourself, it is important to not allow perceived shortcoming from the past to affect your progress. That is similar to allowing mud from your shoes to ruin your carpets or rugs! Fortunately, we know all about keeping carpets and rugs clean and that leaves you with one less item to worry about it in 2017!

Many people use the phrase "spring cleaning" to remind themselves that once a year, some form of heavy cleaning needs to take place. At SERVPRO of Belle Meade, we do recommend a professional cleaning of your carpet every 12 months. However, if your carpet or rugs withstand a heavy amount of foot traffic, then consider preventative maintenance more often.

There are ways to keep your rug or carpet looking and smelling fresh everyday. Regularly vacuuming prevents the dry soil that most carpets and rugs trap from making a home in your home. If you have a furry, shedding, four-legged family member (code-word for pet puppy) as well, this tip is important. Animal hair, gases, oils and other dust settle in carpets and rugs.

Consider moving furniture in an area to create different traffic patterns. This prevents one area of the room from becoming overused and carpet fraying. If you turn the lights off in a room and walk from end of the other without bumping into anything, congratulations! You're a ninja! Also, it might be a sign that your furniture has not moved for some time. But we understand if you like the way your room looks; hey, it's your home and we aren't judging!

Strategic placement of walk-off mats are useful in rooms that have doors that connect to outside. Wipe your shoes and leave them in an area near the door. This works well with young ones who can never seem to find their left shoe when it's time to leave for the dentist.

There are situations that home maintenance cannot handle alone and SERVPRO has plenty of solutions. Our state-of-the-art specialized cleaning methods include:

  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.
  • Hot Water Extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.
  • Dry Cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

Whatever mix of professional and home remedy you want to use is great. When it is time for the professionals, make sure SERVPRO of Belle Meade is at the top of your list!

Let Us Help You Keep Nashville Clean from Vandalism

Need Vandalism and Graffiti Cleanup Services? Call Us Today – (615) 242-9391

Did you know that SERVPRO of Belle Meade handles graffiti and vandalism cleanup? Some forms of public art are beloved and celebrated in neighborhoods as they help identify a well known attribute of the area. 12 South and 5 Points are both popular Nashville neighborhoods with very different vibes and the area reflects that! However, not all forms of "public art" have beautification or identification as its intent.

According to NeighborhoodScout.com and CityRating.com, in 2012, the city property crime rate in Nashville was higher than the national property crime rate average and higher than the Tennessee state average. While some data suggests the rates will be lower in 2016, we have seen the articles about the vandalism at the Music City Central bus station which caused MTA to shut it down for repairs. Or the story of the Belmont art graduate who had her mural for East Side Cycles on 11th Street in East Nashville defaced with white paint. It is not an everyday occurrence, but when it happens in your neighborhood or to your home or business, it can be upsetting.

SERVPRO of Belle Meade's team of cleanup experts know how to get your business or home free of any graffiti. We can fix many examples of vandalism, such as broken windows. We can also do this  in a timely manner to minimize the amount of anguish the situation may cause. SERVPRO can remove spray-painted graffiti from exterior walls and driveways, walkways, asphalt, metals, wood, glass, plastic, and masonry.

Hopefully, your place of business or house will never experience the effects of vandalism. However, SERVPRO of Belle Meade is available to cleanup in the event you are the victim of a property crime. So keep our number close and we'll be on the scene in an emergency.

Prepare Your Chimney For Cooler Months in Nashville!

9/2/2016 (Permalink)

Clean out your chimney before the season ends!

September is here! Although autumn doesn't begin until the 22nd of September, we are going to help you prepare early! The temperatures will mellow into a more comfortable range, leaves will begin to fall and before you blink twice, winter will be knocking on our doors! But let's not get ahead of ourselves - we're here to talk about cleaning your chimney in anticipation of cooler nights. So let's get started!

Chimneys need cleaning at least once a year, more often if yours sees more use than average. Autumn is a a great time to check because you don't want to start a fire for the first time in winter without performing maintenance. How do you know if your chimney needs sprucing up? Take a flashlight and look into your chimney. Take a knife and scrape a bit of soot off of the wall. If it is more than 1/8 inches thick, get your gloves on because it's cleaning time!

If this is the first time your fireplace is seeing cleaning materials, be sure to check for nesting animals and critters who may have made a home there!

The next step is to measure the chimney. It's okay to overestimate but try to be as accurate as possible. This can be accomplished by climbing on the roof and measuring down or measuring up through the fireplace. The size and shape of the flue is important to jot down as well. It can be round or square, 6" or 8".

It’s time to grab a chimney brush, goggles, a broom and dustpan and a face mask. Cleaning from the top down with a weighted brush requires up and down motions as you scrape away debris. Cleaning from the bottom up requires a partner on the roof to help scrub with a pulley system. After cleaning there will be lots of debris on the floor. Be careful sweeping and discarding!

Now your chimney is ready for the cooler winter nights!

Keep your pool clear all summer!

6/16/2016 (Permalink)

Keep cool this summer in a clear, sparkling pool!

With another hot summer on horizon, I bet you’re thankful for that backyard pool! If you’re lucky enough to have your own pool, it’s important to keep up on cleaning and maintenance to keep it clear and clean all summer long.

Get on track with these tips from Jennifer Blair, Demand Media:

  1. Maintain Chemical Levels.

Most importantly, keep the chlorine and pH levels in check. Chlorine keeps your pool clear by killing germs and bacteria that make their way into the water. pH determines how effective the chlorine is, so it’s important to find the perfect acid/base balance. You should test the water in your pool twice per week with water testing kits, such as Home Depot’s 5-Way Pool and Spa Test Kit or the Taylor Comprehensive Test Kit.

  1. Administer Shock and Algaecide Weekly.

With proper chemical levels, weekly shock and algaecide treatments can help keep your pool extra sparkly. You can find these treatments at your local home improvement or pool supply store. Make sure to read the instructions regarding how much product to use based on the size of your pool!

  1. Backwash.

Backwashing is the process of cleaning your pool’s filtration system. This is done by reversing the flow of water through the system. You should backwash your system whenever your pool starts to look cloudy or when the pressure gauge reading is 5-7 pounds per square inch above the normal reading (make sure to make note of what is “normal”).

  1. Skim regularly.

With pools, it’s not just what’s on the inside that counts. What’s on the outside, or top, matters, too! Regularly (at least daily) skim the top of your pool to remove large debris, such as leaves and bugs, that make their way onto the water’s surface. Not only will it make your pool look more inviting, but it will avoid cloudiness from the breakdown of the debris.

Tips For Spring Cleaning Your Nashville Home

5/13/2016 (Permalink)

Got started on cleaning your carpets and rugs!
Spring is a wonderful season in Nashville. Green leaves return to our trees, flowers begin to bloom and residents emerge from (normally mild) winter hibernation. Suddenly, windows are thrown open and sunlight seeps back into our homes. So, there’s no better time of year to kickstart cleaning.

Drape and blind cleaning are typically performed every two years. However, cranking the heat throughout the winter, smoking indoors and other factors can cause soiling and deterioration on the fabric. Once the shutters are open and that cool breeze blows throughout your house again, make sure the air is free of odor causing particles by either dry-cleaning your drapes or having professional SERVPRO technicians come to your house.

Rug and carpet cleaning can be handled by most competent vacuum cleaners. However, tracking snow or mud or pet paw tracks throughout the winter can build up lots of soil. To preserve and extend the life of your rug or carpet, we recommend having a professional cleaning once every year. SERVPRO professionals have state-of-the-art equipment to make your rug and carpet look brand new. Consider these tips as well:

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming

  • Spot removal

  • Pilating the carpet to prevent matting

  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns

  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

These are just a couple of steps you can take to freshen your home this season. We are including one of our favorite (and colorful) Spring Cleaning Checklists can be found via the link here thanks to www.freebiefindingmom.com!

Happy Cleaning!

Air Ducts = House Lungs! So Keep Them Clean in Your Nashville Home!

5/6/2016 (Permalink)

Home lungs need care too!

Owning a home is a wonderful experience that comes with huge responsibilities. The list of what needs to be checked is a lengthy one that can honestly seem overwhelming at times – so let us handle a few of them for you! Keeping your house properly maintained ensures you will have a place you love to call home for years.

One area that many homeowners neglect is properly maintaining the air ducts. If you think about what the air ducts do for your home, it is very similar to what lungs do for your body. With that in mind, the industry standard for residential properties is to have the air ducts cleaned every two - five years. This process improves indoor air quality by moving debris within the duct work. It will increase the lifespan of your AC system and make it more efficient.

You may be thinking, “what could they possibly find in these units?.” We are glad you asked!

We have removed things as eccentric as 1950s soda cans (dating from when the home was built), to the more serious discoveries of mold that people never knew existed. Fortunately, not only do we remove debris, we also treat it with an antimicrobial agent to eliminate mold and bacteria. This is a preventive measure that absolutely helps keep your system free of nasty airborne agents.

Do the smart thing and let us keep your house lungs clean. We will ensure your duct work, air handler and system are free of old soda cans and mold. We are equipped to handle any size unit whether you have a residential home that needs care or a building as large as a hospital. If we do find damaged duct-work or maybe the air duct was never connected, we can complete minor repairs such as reattaching them to the vent.

Let us kick your cigarettes' butts!

Cigarette Odor Removal in Nashville

Do you have a friend who smokes and keeps an air freshener in their car? Sure, it’s a quick fix but you know as soon as you leave the vehicle, you’ll smell of cigarette butt as well.

At SERVPRO of Belle Meade, we know how invasive that cigarette odor can be and we know how to give it the boot. We have a few deodorization methods we can employ based on the complexity and severity of the situation.

Cigarette odors and nicotine staining often require cleaning to remove the source. We use a new technology that allows us to treat the home or car with a safe gas that can eliminate the cigarette smoke odor at its source, without harming your family. We still recommend a good cleaning even if the odor and staining are not heavy because a small treatment today can help to avoid a large service later.

Also, consider having your air ducts cleaned during our cigarette odor removal service. This treatment will neutralize odors in the air duct system. In the majority of cases, the HVAC system is used by SERVPRO to distribute the deodorization product equally throughout the house, which in turn, removes the odor inside the air duct.

Here are a few examples of how we’ve helped rid Nashville of cigarette odor!

Example 1 - A very well known downtown hotel, recently contacted SERVPRO of Belle Meade to convert 6 smoking rooms into non-smoking rooms. Can you imagine the lingering aroma? Within one day, we were able to convert those hotel rooms to non-smoking units without any trace of cigarette smoke odors. We even recommended taking the smoking signs off the doors as we were leaving. The hotel no longer allows smoking and the General Manager was ecstatic.

Example 2 - A local investor purchased a residential investment property in South Nashville that was heavily affected by cigarette odor. This investor put in some elbow grease and cleaned the walls, ceilings and floors himself before calling us. Using our new technology, we completed an air duct cleaning and overnight deodorization. The property was free of any trace of cigarette scent much to his delight.

Example 3 - Air fresheners and dryer sheets not giving your car that fresh scent? Give us 3 hours and you’ll be riding through Music City with the windows down and a odor-free breeze.

Call us with your questions today. We are not afraid to tackle any deodorization challenge and we’re the most effective service in our market in Nashville. Best of all, if our methods prove ineffective in your scenario, we have a money back guarantee.

Skunk Deodorization: Removing Skunk Funk From Your Nashville Home

4/22/2016 (Permalink)

We can rid your home of skunk funk.

You know the smell as soon as it assaults your nostrils. That sulfuric nauseating scent causes you to reach for a tissue, napkin or anything to cover your mouth and nose. It’s bad enough when you’re driving along  back roads and it forces you to roll up your windows. Can you imagine that offensive aroma in your Nashville home? We can and we know how to handle the situation.

Firstly, many people are not aware that skunk deodorization could be covered by insurance. Call SERVPRO first to assist you when talking with insurance to have it at least partially and potentially all of the costs covered if you decide to file a claim.

Typically, calls pertaining to skunk deodorization range from:

1. “I let my dog out and he got sprayed by a skunk and came back in and rubbed against our carpet and upholstery and it smells horrible.”

2. Skunks are known to spray under a house - wherever their nest or living space is located. They could also spray in a crawl space for any number of reasons.

3. The skunk is simply near your house and the smell is pulled in through the air duct or in cracks found near doors and windows.

We’ve heard it all and we know how to handle all of these situations and more! Our first step is to remove the source - I.e. the skunk. We do not recommend you doing this yourself so definitely call an animal professional!

Our second step is to determine what needs to be cleaned - furniture, carpet, clothing. The spray oils can cover multiple surfaces and they will all typically need to be cleaned. Also, if insulation in a crawl space has been affected, it may need to be replaced.

SERVPRO uses proven technology for deodorization allowing them to not just mask the odor but completely eliminate the problem at its source. In the past, this process could take several days, but with this new technology, this process can be fixed in a much more timely fashion...even as short as one day in some circumstances.

If you need SERVPRO to handle your skunk funk, you can expect to be out of your house for short period of time while deodorization is in progress. If filing an insurance claim, the company will occasionally pay for food and hotel while the client is displaced.  Finally, SERVPRO will properly ventilate your home to ensure you and your family return to a clean and safe environment.

Tips to Keeping Your Floor Clean in Your Nashville Home

3/11/2016 (Permalink)

Is your home collecting dirt and germs every time you walk through the door? The answer is yes. Shoes collect bacteria on the soles and can track it straight into your home, but there are a few ways to prevent this. More importantly, there are ways to treat your floor and home if it hasn't been done recently.

Problem:
Some of the bacteria that lands on our shoes can cause a decline in our health if not cleaned. In fact, an EPA study shows that unhealthy herbicides can also be tracked in on our shoes. Don't let this scare you because it can be prevented.

Tip:
Try setting a shoe rack in your garage or right when you walk into your home for shoes to be placed. This limits the exposure of these unwanted germs. It's not a bad idea to clean your shoes once a month to either. Not only will this help eliminate bacteria, but will also make your shoes look better, longer.

Problem:
If you think that your carpet or flooring already has unhealthy herbicides in it, then it may be time for a deep cleaning. Of course this will help kill germs and bacteria, but also get rid of dirt.

Tip:
If you have a steam cleaner, use it to clean your floor. The heat of the water that cleans your carpet will help kill bacteria. If your home is mostly hardwood or tile, grab your mop and the appropriate cleanser to rid your floor of unwanted germs.

Lastly, if you are still unsatisfied, a professional cleaning company can do the job.  In either situation, plan to have a good floor cleaning once a month.

Keeping the carpets clean in your Nashville home this muddy season

1/29/2016 (Permalink)

The wet season is here, bringing on more than just flood and water damage. This is the time of year that our upholstery and floors get affected most with stains from the mud and dirt that we track in.

Although many stains are better off to be removed right away, mud stains should be taken care of after waiting until the mud dries. Trying to clean mud right away causes the mess to spread, giving you a bigger and tougher stain to clean in the end. Drying the mud with a fan can speed up the process of removal. Cleanipedia gives us tips on how we can effectively remove mud stains and keep our carpet clean this season.

1.     Start off by using a vacuum hose to pick up the dry pieces of mud. This will get all of the excess crumbles out of the way to keep from smearing them across the floor. Move the hose gently across the area to ensure that you’re not pressing the dirt deeper into the carpet.

2.     There will most likely be some pieces of mud still stuck to the fibers of the carpet after using the vacuum. These remnants left over will need to be removed by scraping them out of the carpet using a gentle object, such as a spoon.

3.     Once you’ve scraped the dirt out, run the vacuum hose back over the area to pick up the remainder of the particles. If there are still particles left over, continue to scrape and vacuum until all dirt remnants have been removed.

4.     Now that all of the extra mud has been removed from the carpet, there is usually still a stain to be seen unfortunately. There are multiple different methods and removal products to help clean the stain, but even a simple warm water and laundry detergent mixture can do the trick. (Always make sure to try using the solution on a small, unseen portion of carpet first to test it out before applying it to a large area.)

5.     Once you have your mixture put together, soak the sponge into the solution and gently dab the area until the stain is completely covered and faded. Let the area dry naturally to see the outcome.

Remember - If you’re still having trouble removing a stain, SERVPRO of Belle Meade is always available to help!

Keeping the Air in Your Nashville Home Clean this Winter

Now that the weather is getting colder and we’re nestled away inside our homes, it’s a good time to check your home for certain things that may need to be replaced or cleaned. Take your air ducts for example. Many times, these go unnoticed, but can’t be forgotten. According to Houselogic, the air in your home circulates through the air ducts about five to seven times a day, carrying all of the dust and particles through the air. This is where your HVAC filter comes into play, but this filter can only handle so much.

Reasons for cleaning your air ducts

·      Keeping the air clean – This can be important, especially for people with allergies. Getting rid of the dust will ensure that it does not get fed back into the home.

·      Ease of airflow – Making sure that your air ducts are clean makes it easier for air to flow smoothly and circulate throughout the house. This also reduces the amount of energy that needs to be used in order to circulate the air.

Methods of cleaning air ducts

  • Hand-held vacuum – This can be done by attaching the brush to the end of the vacuum hose. This may be the easiest for some people, but unfortunately not the most efficient. This usually leaves dust behind in places that are harder to reach.
  • Mechanical brush – A rotary brush is attached to a mounted vacuum that is fed through the ductwork to suck away debris. This method can be harsher for older systems.
  • Air Sweep – This is known as the most effective way to get the job done. A mounted vacuum with a compressed air hose is fed into the ducts to get rid of any lodged or stuck debris.

Reasons to have the carpet cleaned in your Nashville building year round

10/24/2015 (Permalink)

Carpeting holds many pollutants, dirt and dust follicles making it easy for particles to build up over time. As the rainy season approaches, muddy shoes join right along with it. During the muddy season, it gets tougher to keep flooring clean and prevent stains from surfacing on the carpet. CleanLink.com lists the top reasons to have your carpeting cleaned year round.

  • Prolongs the life of the carpeting. As dirt and material gets locked into carpet, it wears the flooring away over time.
  • Most warranties for carpet are maintained by having it cleaned using the extraction method approximately every 12-18 months.
  • Carpet traps airborne pollutants and allergens, so keeping it cleaned regularly protects indoor air quality.
  • Stains and spots are easier to remove and keep the carpet from getting permanently damaged over time.
  • Carpeting is easier to maintain. Keeping carpet cleaned regularly keeps from needing deep cleaned often.
  • Having clean carpet in a room, especially an office building enhances the overall appearance and atmosphere for workers and customers.

Keep the carpet in your Nashville business maintained year round to prevent replacement

8/20/2015 (Permalink)

Keeping carpet clean is not a fun task, especially in high traffic areas such as commercial buildings. As a business, it’s crucial to keep that clean and professional image, but as we know, replacing carpet can get pricey, so it’s important to maintain and take care of the carpet year round. According to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, there are things you can do maintain your commercial carpeting and keep it from getting permanently damaged over time.

·      Keep the walkway leading up to your building clean to prevent dirt, clippings and other materials from tracking in with the crowd.

·      To grab any dirt that’s being tracked in before it hits your carpeting, place a large entry mat outside of the doorway on a hard surface. Make sure it is on top of cement or something that will not get water damage from water soaking through. The mat should be large enough for people to take a couple of steps to wipe away anything that is stuck to the bottom of their shoes.

·      Make sure to vacuum at the end of everyday. Since your commercial building sees much more traffic than an everyday home, it requires much more vacuuming and upkeep. The quicker you pick up the dirt, the less likely it is to stick in the carpet and the easier it is to remove.

·      Aside from making sure that you’re vacuuming every night to remove the loose dirt, it’s also important to deep clean the carpeted area semi-annually. This will keep the high traffic areas such as the entrance clear from collecting dirt build up over time.

·      For any stains or spills that occur, make sure to treat the area immediately to keep from permanently damaging the affected carpet.

How to clean a surface using dry ice blasting

8/14/2015 (Permalink)

Check out the video link at the end of the article!

According to cleanblasting.com, there are three steps in the process of dry ice blasting.

Step 1 –

The dry ice pellets are sent out of the blasting gun at a high speed creating a forceful impact when hitting the surface that they are projected at. This energy transfer causes the surface to be cleared of any extra dirt/contaminents without damaging the surface underneath.

Step 2 –

The dry ice is a very low temperature of -79 degrees Celcius causing a micro-thermal shock when the dry ice pellets come in contact with the contaminents and surface that they’re hitting. This micro-thermal shock is what also cracks and removes the particles after the initial energy transfer.

Step 3 –

The last step of the dry ice blasting process is the gas pressure. As the dry ice pellet explodes on impact, it converts to a harmless CO2 gas that is forced between the contanimenent and substrate layer forcing the last of the contaminent layer away from the substrate, leaving only the contaminents to be left behind and the substrate unharmed.
