Keeping Rugs Clean And Free From Water Damage

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

Most of us have area rugs in our homes and places of businesses, and they are great for keeping feet warm and making our living and working spaces look great. They also take a beating during the winter, when people entering and leaving our homes and businesses are out walking in bad weather - rain, snow, and ice, and tracking in mud and water.

Water can damage your rugs, and if they are not cared for right away, mold can set in and spread, even in cold weather.

A daily vacuum of area rugs is always a good idea, and if they are damp or wet, they should be removed right away and placed somewhere warm to dry out. Puddles can form if people come in from a snowy day, and those puddles can stay underneath an area rug for a long time, undetected. So always check the rugs in your walkways and other rooms to see if any puddled water is hiding underneath. Causing damages to rug and floor alike.

Damp rugs can smell unpleasant, as well. Baking soda can be used to deodorize area rugs and carpets during wet weather. A single layer sprinkled on a rug and left for 15 minutes or so and then vacuumed up can make a big difference by fighting odor in your living and work spaces, and can also keep mold from starting to take hold.

Using a dry carpet shampoo can be very useful as well. These products can be sprayed on to a rug or carpet, and left for an particular length of time, which will remove spots and stains when they are vacuumed up, leaving your area rug or carpet looking great again! In addition, many of these products contain ingredients that will discourage mold from starting to grow and spread, damaging your floors.

The wet weather of winter is always a challenge, but being prepared and proactive will help you survive till spring!
