The Importance of a Storm Preparedness Plan

9/27/2023 (Permalink)

Here in Nashville, we never know when storms are going to strike, so it is best to be continuously prepared for a tornado or severe thunderstorm. In the fall, tornado season picks up from mid-October to November, so now is a great time to go over or construct a storm preparedness plan for yourself and your loved ones. Our SERVPRO Belle Meade/West Nashville team cares about your safety, and we want you to be equipped to handle the Nashville storm season

Preventative Storm Damage Tips

  • Loose Furniture: Many storms cannot be predicted, but if you know a storm is on the way, then it is a good idea to chain down or bring in your outdoor furniture so that it cannot damage your windows or walls.
  • Seal Windows and Doors: It only takes a small opening for the wind to get through and rip open windows or doors. This is a scary fact but can be counteracted through home maintenance.
  • Clear Your Yard: If storms are on the rise, it is important to get debris out of your yard as soon as possible. If there is a dead tree or branches you have been waiting to remove, don’t hesitate! These could fall on your home or car, or injure someone, so being proactive is the best step.
  • Review Insurance Policies: Living in an area with frequent and/or severe storms means it is a good idea to check what your insurance policy covers in terms of damage so that you are prepared in case the unavoidable occurs.
  • Run Tornado Drills: Whether at home with your family or at work running your business, you want to make sure you have a plan in place should a tornado warning occur. Getting to a lower area, such as a basement or underneath a heavy object, and covering your head will help keep you safe, and it is always a good idea to have flashlights and water bottles around. While this level of protection may not be needed for an everyday storm, it is good to practice where to go and what to do in case of a truly dangerous tornado.

  • Restore vs. Replace: Other restoration companies may simply replace everything from scratch, costing you more money in the long run and potentially causing the loss of cherished items. At SERVPRO, we believe in a “restore vs. replace” approach, meaning we will work to repair your property to its original state, choosing new materials only when the integrity of a previous material is compromised. At SERVPRO, we strive to make it as if your disaster “never even happened.”

Our SERVPRO professionals at SERVPRO Belle Meade/West Nashville care deeply about the safety of our community.
