Fireplace Safety for Winter

11/23/2022 (Permalink)

The holidays are here, and it’s the happiest time of year. There’s nothing more comforting than sitting around the fireplace with family and loved ones to bask in the joys of the season. However, there are a few safety precautions to ensure everyone’s safety and good spirits this season. Depending on the type of fireplace you have, you can follow some guidelines while taking full advantage of the hearth of your home. No matter what, safety always comes first.

What Safety Precautions Should Be In Place If You Have A Gas Fireplace?

  • Keep ALL furniture at least three feet away from the fireplace! Keeping your items a safe distance away from your gas fireplace allows you room for error should a fire start. It’s only a matter of time before a tiny spark becomes a blazing fire.
  • Going along with the first point, ensure you don’t leave flammable items near your gas fireplace! Paper products and window treatments, among others, are highly flammable and should be kept from the fireplace at all times.
  • Have you checked your safety screen barrier? While efficient, the sturdy glass panel that separates your gas fireplace from your Belle Meade home can get hot quickly. You should ensure the screen barrier is securely attached to the unit for your safety.

Do You Have A Wood Fireplace? Here’s What You Should Know…

  • This tip also applies to gas fireplaces: Install a carbon monoxide detector! Faulty fireplace maintenance can directly result from carbon monoxide odors permeating your home.
  • Natural wood has its issues when you burn it for your fireplace- that’s why we recommend seasoned hardwood or manufactured logs to reduce soot buildup. Chimney fires are often correlated with soot buildup over time which manufactured logs can prevent. However, these logs burn hotter than natural wood, so be careful not to burn too many at once!
  • NEVER (and we mean never) overload the fireplace to prevent burning embers from rolling out of the fireplace. It might be a simple housekeeping tip grounded in common sense, but a little really goes a long way.
