Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

The Only Guide You'll Ever Need For Storm Damage Restoration In Green Hills

8/30/2022 (Permalink)

Storms come in many forms: hurricanes, tornadoes, hailstorms, monsoons, you name it. If you've lived in the Volunteer State long enough, you would be familiar with tornadoes and summer rainstorms. With these storms prevalent in the southeastern part of the United States, it always helps to be prepared. This includes knowing what to do and who to call if and when an emergency strikes. As the storm damage experts, SERVPRO of Belle Meade and West Nashville has the tools, training, and resources to tackle all storm damage, flooding, and mold scenarios. We can handle residential AND commercial storm damage cleanup situations, too.

What Are Some Little-Known Facts About Tennessee Tornadoes?

Tornadoes, sometimes called "twisters," are severe thunderstorms that can go beyond 300 miles per hour. While you may have experienced a tornado or two in Green Hills, how much do you really know about them? We're here to relay some little-known facts about tornadoes- after all, to prepare for an emergency, you must understand it!

  • Tornadoes can travel 10-20 miles per hour, on average, and it only takes five minutes for a tornado to be on the ground for about five minutes.
  • Supercells are where the deadliest tornadoes emerge. These tornadoes have the power to produce destructive hail, frequent lightning, and flash floods.
  • The deadliest tornado in Middle Tennessee (and one of the deadliest tornadoes in US history!) is the tornado outbreak during spring 1909. These tornadoes were just one of the series of tornadoes that hit the midwest in 1909, including the Ohio Valley and the Lower Mississippi Valley.

What Can We Learn From The Great Flood Of 2010?

Do you remember the Nashville flood that took place in May of 2010? This was another flood that Middle Tennessee had never seen before until that day. Still, we can learn a few things from this flood- not only about the storm itself but also about preparation tips in case a storm of this magnitude were to happen again.

  • 13.57 inches of rain were measured during a 36-hour period, according to the National Weather Service. This record shattered the previous two-day rainfall record in Nashville.
  • This flood cost more than two billion dollars in property damage and 120 million dollars in public infrastructure damage in Middle Tennessee.
  • If it is pouring outside with no signs of stopping anytime soon, turn on the TV to catch live coverage of the weather event or purchase a battery-powered radio in case your power runs out.
  • Before evacuating (if the situation warrants it!), spare a few minutes (if you can) to shut off utilities like water, electricity, and gas at the main switch. If you don't know where they are, don't waste time and evacuate!
