Nashville Water Damage and Restoration

10/16/2014 (Permalink)

With how unpredictable weather can be, it sometimes strikes when we least expect it, leaving damages that we aren’t able to prepare for.  According to the Insurance Information Institute, about 1 in 55 insured homes have a property damage claim that is caused by water damage or freezing each year.  Between the years of 2008 and 2012, water damage and freezing was one of the leading causes in property damage, accounting for an average of 21%.

Water damage is not something that can wait to be restored.  The moisture throughout an enclosed building can cause growth of mold and other organisms rapidly within a short period of time.  According to thewaterpage.com, exposure to mold can cause serious health risks including respiratory diseases and other asthma and aggravated allergy symptoms.  It’s important to clean the affected area as soon as possible.  This can be done on your own very cautiously(although not recommended especially with disclosure requirements upon sale of a home/business) or with the help of water damage restoration companies/specialists.

Some tips given by a leading insurance carrier for preventing water damage include:

  • Be careful where you plant(trees/plants)
  • Clean out roof gutters
  • Keep an eye on your water bill
  • You might not know there is damage until it is done
  • Use a drain snake instead of unclogging chemicals
  • Never pour grease down your sink
