3 Tips For Homeowners To Prevent Storm Damage

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

It’s that time of year again...April showers bring May flowers in Middle Tennessee. Excess rain and spring storms inevitably increase the chances of flooding and storm damage. However, homeowners can and should take precautionary measures to prevent hazards from occurring during and after storms.

Wind, precipitation, and lightning can cause fire, floods, and lots of other types of damage, so we’ve compiled a list of 3 tips for you to prevent storm damage to your home.

How Can I Prevent Moisture From Entering My Home?

Sealing air leaks around your windows and doors prevents moisture from seeping through your siding and walls into your home. Wherever you can see light shining through around your doors and windows is a good place to start adding weatherstripping. Reduce energy loss and block gusty winds and moisture from your home with weatherstripping, which helps with temperature control as well as minimizes the growth of any mold that may occur as a result of water or moisture accumulation from spring storms.

Can Trimming Branches Help Prevent Storm Damage?

Do an assessment of any dead or diseased trees or large plants in your yard every spring. Any tree limbs that are low-hanging, dead, or diseased may be susceptible to easily breaking during a particularly wild storm, and they could end up in the roof of your home or breaking through your siding. To avoid any devastating damage that a large tree limb or other loose objects near your home may create, make sure you cut these limbs off and dispose of them far away from your home so they don’t blow into anything as a result of a storm.

Why Is Cleaning My Gutters Important?

Gutters are meant to draw water away from your home, but if they’re clogged from dirt and debris from the winter season, they can’t do their job. Without a clear gutter to guide water from the top of your home to appropriate places outside of it, water will build up in places that you don’t want it to, which may damage the foundation of your home or even worse.
