Preparing For Tornado Season In Nashville

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

March is finally here, which means that tornado season has arrived here in Nashville. In this month last year—which was 2020—Nashville experienced some serious damage as a result of a tornado with winds up to 165 miles an hour. We all felt the devastation that North Nashville experienced, and as a result, we’re more committed than ever to promoting tornado preparedness measures during tornado season in Middle Tennessee. We’ve compiled a list of 4 things to do to prepare for tornado season this year.

1) Make an Emergency Kit

This rule of thumb should be true for all disasters, not just tornadoes. Having a pre-packed emergency kit in your car and in your home with essential supplies like required medications, nonperishable food, clothing, a blanket, first aid supplies, a flashlight, a form of money, and a radio makes it easy for your to grab and dash when an emergency occurs. You never know when you’ll need to access your emergency kit, so it’s best to be prepared and have one nearby in the locations you frequent most.

2) Know the Signs of a Tornado

The sky often looks dark and greenish when tornadoes are around, and large, dark, low-lying clouds, especially when rotating, are clear signs that a tornado is approaching. Large hail and a loud roar often accompany tornadoes, and you should also make sure that your phone receives weather alerts so you know when tornado watches and warnings are in effect. If you spot a tornado, dash for cover according to your safety plan right away. In general, the lowest most interior part of your house is the safest place for you to be when a tornado is approaching, and you should crouch on the floor and cover your head with your hands. If you’re in a mobile home or car, get out right away and take shelter in a building, and always avoid windows and anything that could shatter or blow toward you.

3) Have a Safety Plan and Practice It

If you own a business, make sure that you have a tornado safety plan in place and practice it with tornado drills so all of your employees know where to go when a tornado passes. The same rings true for your family in your home. Also, always put as many walls as you can between you and the tornado. Nashville.gov has a great article about what to do and where to go when a tornado watch or warning is in effect.
