Tips to Prevent Mold Growth in Your Bathroom

1/13/2021 (Permalink)

Your bathroom is probably the room in your house that sees the most daily traffic, and it’s also a hotbed for moisture and mold growth if it isn’t properly cleaned and taken care of throughout the year. Mold thrives in dark, warm, and moist spaces, and your bathroom sink, shower and tub, and your toilet all are avenues where water regularly is used and may accumulate over time if left unattended. Although mold growth in your bathroom may seem inevitable when you really think about all the nooks and crevices where mold could start to colonize, there are plenty of preventative measures that you can take to prevent mold growth in your bathroom.

We’ve put together 4 tips to help you prevent mold growth in your bathroom, and we hope you’ll take them into consideration as you go about your cleaning routine.

1) Towel dry mold-prone surfaces.

One of the easiest ways for mold to grow is when mold-prone surfaces are left moist. Lots of crevices in your bathroom hold onto water that isn’t easily let go (like your shower curtains), and if you let that water untouched, it may lead to mold growth. Make it a habit to towel dry all mold-prone surfaces in your bathroom like your shower curtain and any other corners or crannies that have water sitting on or in them if they are left unattended.

2) Spray all bathroom surfaces weekly.

Invest in an all-purpose bathroom cleaner spray, and schedule a weekly bathroom cleaning where you spray all your bathroom surfaces and wipe them down with a microfiber cloth to clean and dry them. Surfaces you should pay particular attention to include your toilet, bathtub, and sinks as well as your shower walls.

3) Use your bathroom vents.

Although we often think of bathroom vents or fans as tools to help deodorize the powder room, they also do the important job of removing extra humidity from the air that can condense on your bathroom surfaces. Especially after hot, steamy showers when lots of humidity is released in the air, turn on your bathroom vent and leave it running for 10-15 minutes to suck the humidity out of the air.

4) Wash shower curtain liners and rugs often.

Every time your shower curtain and rugs are used, they get wet, which means they become prime locations for mold growth if they aren’t cleaned on the regular. Every one to two weeks, wash and dry them so you can enjoy fresh, clean rugs and shower curtain liners without any mold sneaking onto them.
