How to Prevent Mold Damage in Your Commercial Building

8/18/2020 (Permalink)

Breathing in the odors of rotten food and musty socks is never fun, and the hazards of smelling the odor of mold range far beyond just general displeasure. Whether you know that your commercial building has a history of mold, is vulnerable to mold growth due to other conditions, or just want to make sure that mold damage never occurs and potentially harms the health of your employees and customers, here are 3 steps that you can take to prevent mold damage in your commercial building:

  1. Routinely inspect all areas of your building for mold, water damage, and areas vulnerable to mold growth. Any areas that are prone to moisture, like near your air conditioning units, are hotspots for potential mold growth. We also recommend checking areas near your windows, your water and sewage pipes, underneath bathroom and kitchen sinks, and anywhere else there are water sources in your building. By scheduling a monthly inspection around your building, you can be sure to catch any mold growth before it becomes hazardous and damaging to your property and its occupants.
  2. Clean HVAC drip pans regularly. Make sure that your HVAC’s coils and drip pans are regularly attended to and any water and moisture that is clinging to them is removed. Plugged pans don’t drain properly, and this makes them a breeding ground for mold when moisture accumulates. All of the HVAC’s ducts and other components also should be kept dry and moisture-free as best is possible to prevent mold growth.
  3. Attend to any plumbing issues as soon as possible. If a pipe ever leaks or bursts, it’s essential to call in a professional or repair it yourself at the earliest convenience possible. A leaky roof or a leaky pipe as well as unsealed windows and doors can give moisture time to accumulate and invite mold to start growing.

In addition to these 3 steps, here are some more mold prevention actions you can take.
