SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville: Community Superheroes

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

As a child, I bet you loved Show ‘N Tell day. You never knew what some other kid might bring: a pet frog, a favorite book, or the super-cool toy they got for Christmas. And the anticipation you felt while waiting for your turn to show off your beloved item…. There was nothing better!

Recently, some Sumner County school students held a show ‘n tell “Community Helpers Day,” and they were asked by their teacher to bring their parents to class. The parents were invited to share with the children how their jobs help the community. One student brought his dad, who just happens to work for SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville!

Dad (whose name is Dan) was able to talk to the students about disasters, and how his company comes to the rescue by helping families and businesses clean up after storms, fires, floods, and accidents. He explained what can happen to homes and properties during those times, and how it can be very difficult and messy to take care of things afterwards. He let the children know that having a company like SERVPRO in a town or city is very important, because they do a job that most people cannot do for themselves very easily.

Dan let the children know that the SERVPRO team are always ready, 24 hours a day, to help people in need (kind of like Superman!) and that they even know how to get rid of mold problems, which is a very serious problem to have, whether you are big or small. The kids learned that a company like SERVPRO knows how to get to where they need to go really fast, and that they have all kinds of machinery and tools to help them do their jobs so that people can be taken care of.

There were kid-sized hardhats for students to use while they worked alongside Dan and his co-worker Brad to learn how to extract water, and that was a class favorite. Getting rid of excess water when a flood happens, whether it’s due to a broken pipe or a big storm, is definitely a job for a community superhero!

The whole class got to see what a SERVPRO van looks like, and stood in front of one with Dan and Brad for a group photo. They also learned that vans like this one are used by the company to bring workers and supplies to the sites where people need help. Now all the kids know how to recognize a SERVPRO vehicle by that great color! And just how cool it is to know that there are people in our town whose job it is to help us when we can’t do it ourselves, no matter whether it’s day or night. On “Community Helpers Day,” they got to meet some real life superheroes, and the team at SERVPRO of Belle Meade/ West Nashville is proud to have been able to be a part of that!

Holiday Lighting Decoration Tips

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

Get in the spirit of the holidays and decorate your home!

Nashville may be known as Music City, but it is also known for putting on some great holiday shows, and not all these have to do with music. The truth is that people from Nashville love to decorate for the holidays and, while fire safety precautions are always taken, they go well out of their way to put on some great lighting shows! Of course, if you want in on the action, consider some of the following holiday decoration tips for your lighting:

  • Before you start decorating think about the look you are going for in decorating your home for the holidays. Do you want fun and cheery? Do you want a more elegant display? Obviously, if you want elegance, you will want to pass on the 6 foot Santa on your roof.
  • During the holidays, you are apt to get a higher number of guests to your home. A quick call to SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville will get the inside of your home ready for holidays and you can take care of the outside by utilizing whatever shrubs, trees, or fencing you have to create a magical and decorative path for guests to follow.
  • Outlining the unique characteristics of your Nashville home with lighting can make your home stand out in your neighborhood. Whether you prefer stunning white lights or colorful, lighting your home up will create a fantastic holiday scene.
  • Take special care with fire prevention and safety when hooking up your lights. Make sure to use outdoor lighting on the exterior of your home, as the fire damage can be extensive to the exterior, and the interior, if you use the improper lighting.
  • Don’t be afraid to go big with your lighting. A swirl of lights surrounding your chimney, a tree, or your fence posts can do wonders for your holiday spirit. Again, make sure that you are following proper safety protocol with these. Don’t overload your outlets!
  • If you want to further reduce the risk of an electrical fire, remember you can use battery operated lighting to illuminate your home as well. Small holiday bags placed on your steps with battery-operated candles will provide you with the magic you need for the holidays.

Nothing says you have the holiday spirit more than decorating your home with cheerful lighting. The important thing to remember is you can’t go wrong with whatever type of display you put up. As long as it puts you in the mood for the holidays, that is all that matters.

4 Tips to Protect Your Nashville Home Before Going on Vacation

7/14/2017 (Permalink)

Follow these tips to leave the stress behind before you leave on vacation!

Heading to the beach? Hear the ocean calling? Or maybe it's a retreat into the mountains or a fishing trip to the lake? Maybe a journey overseas to a magical destination or resort town? If you choose to take a vacation this year (and we definitely think you should!), it is important to remember to protect your home before going on vacation. Here are 4 tips to protect your home before going on vacation from SERVPRO of Belle Meade.

Tip #1: Install Security Cameras Outdoors and Indoors that Use a WIFI Network

By installing security cameras outdoors and indoors that use a WIFI network, you can check on your home while you are gone. You can also receive notifications if anyone attempts to break into your home. This will allow you to notify authorities and to also have footage of the incident with photographs and videos of those responsible. This is generally a good idea for use when you are home as well.

Tip #2: Home Maintenance Should Be Completed

It might be tempting to put off that latest home maintenance project until you return, but you never know what will happen while you are gone. By not fixing your small air conditioner unit problem, the whole unit may fail while you are gone and cause hot temperatures that destroy beloved items or injure pets staying inside the home. By not fixing your outdoor gutter, a storm may come along and knock the whole gutter off. By not fixing small home maintenance problems before you leave, you leave your home vulnerable and invite bigger disasters.

Tip #3: Cleaning Your Home Will Make Coming Home More Inviting

This one isn't a "necessity," but it can make a world of difference when you return from your trip and find your home clean and inviting. SERVPRO of Belle Meade offers cleaning solutions that can leave your home dust-free and ready for your return. Don't leave dirt to collect.

Tip #4: Don't Share That You are on Vacation on Social Media

It might be tempting to share those luxury photos of your feet in the sand or your smiling family out boating on the open water, but by sharing vacation photos on social media while you are on vacation you open yourself up to burglars. Share as many vacation photos as you want, but wait until you get back home.

At SERVPRO of Belle Meade, we recognize the importance of taking a little time for yourself and leaving the world behind by going on a vacation. Let us help you take care of your home projects before you leave. We are trusted by Nashville realtors, homeowners, business owners, construction companies, disaster cleanup crews, and building managers. SERVPRO of Belle Meade is proud to serve the Nashville area.

Saving Lambie and Duckie!

1/27/2017 (Permalink)

Jeff Sewell saved the day!

We write often about the ways in which SERVPRO of Belle Meade can meet your needs when faced with a cleanup after a disaster. Whether it’s flood damage, sewer cleanup or any other traumatic circumstance, SERVPRO always hopes to help make it “like it never even happened”. And even though the memories of the winter holidays are receding, one family has reason to continue to be thankful, and we were happy to be a part of their recovery story.

The SERVPRO of Belle Meade team received a call for a family who had suffered a devastating fire in their home the Monday after Christmas. These calls are always difficult, but the team wanted to help this family begin to put the pieces together after the disaster. Sometimes, even in the face of undeniably awful loss, something can be salvaged.

SERVPRO began the assessment with the family about the scope of the cleanup and items of loss. During this time, the daughter asked her mother about two particular items: Lambie and Duckie. This little lamb and duck had accompanied her since she was an infant and carried deep sentimental value. Unfortunately, Lambie and Duckie where in a room with a collapsed ceiling. The two keepsakes sat buried beneath soot. The parents attempted to express to their child that Lambie and Duckie were likely gone.

Enter Jeff Sewell, a SERVPRO team member.

Aware of the immense value of this lamb and duck to the daughter, Jeff volunteered to rescue them. Beneath the ashes and soot, Jeff searched for Lambie and Duckie. After some time, the effort was rewarded with a successful recovery. However, the toys were covered in grime and dirt and smelled entirely of smoke. Not giving up hope of a complete restoration, Jeff volunteered to return to the office and “make it like it never happened” for this little girl’s toys.

Back at headquarters, a specially formulated solution for cleaning and eradicating smoke odor was prepared. The solution would not harm the keepsakes but could removed the stench permanently. After the technique ran its cycle, Lambie and Duckie were presented back to the family in recovered condition.

We understand how difficult it can be during the time after such events. That is why we hire good people like Jeff Sewell at SERVPRO of Belle Meade. Jeff wanted to go above and beyond a simple job and made sure a family received the best possible treatment. We always promise to do our best whenever you give us a call!

Rush Back to The Gold Rush in Nashville!

8/25/2016 (Permalink)

Come see (and smell) the new Gold Rush, Nashville!

The Gold Rush Restaurant and Bar is legendary in Nashville. The popular dive makes its way onto plenty of "Top 10" and "Must See" lists in Nashville. Their fantastic bean rolls keep the kitchen humming until late into the night. The establishment is often the place to be after a musical performance at the neighboring Exit/In. Since 1974, the bar has been a staple of the Nashville nightlife, but another staple of The Gold Rush is its status as one of the few bars that still allow smoking inside. Well, that status has changed forever thanks to SERVPRO of Belle Meade.

Recently, SERVPRO turned one of the last bastions of smoking in Music City into a non-smoking business. Overnight. Yes, you read right. 42 years of cigarette smoke and its dingy residue vanished into much thinner air in one night. The air ducts received a serious cleaning as well. Now, lungs everywhere can breathe easier while gulping down more bean rolls. How was all this achieved in one night without a massive cleanup effort?

The SERVPRO team employs a state-of-the-art proprietary deodorization process that eliminates smoke odor in a safer way than ozone or thermal foggers. SERVPRO uses the same process to turn smoking rooms into non-smoking rooms in hotels. The ability to rid cigarette smoke in this way is a great way to unveil a grand reopening.

So, keep track of The Gold Rush website’s new unveiling via the timer on their homepage and head in to see (and smell) the changes soon!

SERVPRO of Belle Meade Celebrates 10 Years of Service to Nashville

8/24/2016 (Permalink)

We love this city and look forward to the NEXT 10 years of service!

This month marks the 10 year anniversary of SERVPRO of Belle Meade serving Nashville.

During the last decade Rob Dixon and his team have helped many people recover from the low points of disaster. He is so grateful for the support and trust received from the community during this time.

The origin of SERVPRO of Belle Meade is 99% divine intervention and 1% "right place at the right time", one of Dixon's closest friends brought up the idea during a dinner conversation! The rest is history and a self-described rollercoaster of a journey that is only trending upwards.

The SERVPRO brand has a special significance for Dixon as well. His roots in Gallatin also house the SERVPRO international headquarters. The support his franchise receives from corporate team members and fellow SERVPRO managers mirror what his team hopes Nashville feels. Rob loves the sense of togetherness in the Nashville community. That spirit helped the business and the city survive and thrive after a tremendous tragedy struck.

The May 2010 Nashville flood was devastating. Many residents still feel the sting of that disaster. SERVPRO of Belle Meade was a mere 3 years old when the flood waters rose. The natural disaster was a sink or swim moment for the franchise. The volume of calls were at an all-time high and it was again 99% divine intervention and 1% hard work that made the team thrive and survive. Additionally, 300 SERVPRO teams from around the country came to Nashville to help the hurting community. The quality of work that those teams performed helped set the standard for a SERVPRO franchise that still exists. In fact, the Belle Meade location ranks in the top 100 SERVPRO locations out of the 1700 spread across the United States and Canada.

Your support is crucial to our ability to better serve this community. 5 years ago, Dixon purchased its current home near downtown Nashville which enables SERVPRO of Belle Meade to respond to your needs EVEN faster. This is all because you trust and believe in our service. For that we thank you and look forward to the next 10 years of meeting your needs.

We at SERVPRO stand firmly with all firefighters and the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities.

On September 11, 2016, the 7th Annual Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place at William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower in Downtown, Nashville, TN. On that day, 343 firefighters will put on their full gear and climb 110 stories to remember the 343 FDNY Firefighters who died at the Twin Towers.

This is the third year that SERVPRO will be a sponsor of this event and we are proud to be a part of such a respectful tribute. The Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is an emotional and grueling day as we remember the sacrifices that were made and the families that were left behind.

According to the official website by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the 343 firefighters participating in the event will be wearing full gear (from 60 to 80 pounds) and climbing for someone specifically. Each climber will be given a badge to wear with the name and photograph of one of the FDNY firefighters killed on 9/11/01. SERVPRO Is Now An Official WeatherBug Location Nashville!

7/15/2016 (Permalink)

Watching the skies with the same view as our neighbors

SERVPRO of Belle Meade is proud to announce a partnership with WSMV-TV to become one of the 19 official WeatherBug locations for the Nashville area! As a sponsor, SERVPRO will be a camera location facing the beautiful downtown Nashville skyline. In segments that feature local WeatherBug perspectives, SERVPRO will be one of the rotating camera POVS.

We all watch as intently as our neighbors when those dark storm clouds roll in from the horizon and threaten storms. Believe us, our creeks and gutters fill up just as quickly too! We all live in the same communities. We use the same parks as you when the sun is just right. We also retreat to our homes with the air conditioning when the temperatures inch towards triple digits. That is what this partnership means for SERVPRO. We work and live together in this great state and we want to be more than just a company you call on when things get bad. When you see our green trucks rolling through the streets, give us a wave - unless you’re driving. In those cases, a smile will do just fine as well!

WSMV.com is a great website for checking forecasts, school closings and other weather-related events. Their WeatherBug is prominently featured on its own page with a list of local weather stations and SERVPRO will soon have its name added to the list!

Be on the lookout for us on your local airwaves!

As we all know, this past month of September holds a special place in our hearts as we remember the lives lost in the tragic event that took place on September 11, 2001. On that day, 343 firefighters lost their lives in attempt to rescue the ones stuck on the top floors of the Twin Tower buildings. To reach the fire and the people waiting to be rescued, the firefighters had to climb 110 stories in full uniform. Since this day, many groups and organizations have come together to raise money for the families directly affected by this event. SERVPRO of Belle Meade is honored to sponsor the Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb event as people gather to honor the fallen firefighters and raise money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

This year, on September 15th, was the 6th annual Nashville stair climb, where 343 local firefighters raised money and registered to climb 110 stories in full gear (60-80 pounds) up the William Snodgrass Tennessee Tower. Each participant is given a badge to wear during the climb, showing the name and photograph of one of the FDNY firefighters killed on September 11th, 2001.100% of the funds raised at the event will be given to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to help the families directly affected by the ones lost back in 2001.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by congress to lead a nationwide effort in order to honor America’s fallen firefighters. According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation official website at firehero.org, the foundation’s mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes and to provide resources to assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives and work within the fire service community to reduce firefighter deaths and injuries. Brenda Dollar

Meet Brenda -

Brenda Dollar came to us recently from western North Carolina being unable to resist the allure of living near her three grandchildren in Nashville.  Her strong background in accounting, banking and customer service make her a great fit in the accounting clerk role.  Her only challenge is living in "enemy territory" as a graduate from the University of Florida and avid Gator fan!  When not at SERVPRO or playing with her grandchildren, she enjoys gardening, scrapbooking, visiting with her extended family (especially her two daughters in Raleigh, NC) and antique hunting with Mike, her husband of 36 years.
