4 Alternatives to Air Fresheners to Deodorize Your Home

1/5/2018 (Permalink)

Nothing is more off-putting than a foul smelling home!

After taking the trash outside, flushing the toilet, and washing smelly clothes, and still odor lingers. Instead of eliminating the odor, air fresheners cover it up, which can worsen the problem. SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville offers a few alternatives to tackle bad smells. We also offer deodorization services that eliminate odors while still being eco-friendly and budget-friendly.

Open Windows

While it's easier to open a window during the spring and summer than fall and winter, a window relies on the outside air to eliminate odors inside the house. A good wind creates necessary ventilation that your air conditioner and your lungs will appreciate. During warmer winter days, open the window for a few hours and let the chilly breeze circulate throughout the house. The more windows that are open, the better the circulation.

Baking Soda

This powerful deodorizer doesn't associate with only refrigerators. Baking soda works in deodorizing the entire home or apartment too, yet the deodorization process is different. You can pour soda in trash cans, vacuum bags, and sink drains. Buy several boxes and place each box in a different part of the house. You can also combine baking soda with other ingredients to make air fresheners and oil diffusers.

Potpourri

Store bought or homemade, potpourri is a great deodorization method. In the store, smell different potpourri for the best scents before buying. Homemade potpourri consists of dried flowers, dried fruit, pine-cones, herbs, spices, and wood shavings. Both versions release an incredible, pleasant aroma. Odors naturally fade away after coming in contact with potpourri.

Simmer Scents

Create homemade deodorization scents on the cooking range. Find a spare saucepan and fill it with water. When the water is simmering, add preferred spices and/or fruits. Possible ingredients are cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, lemon slices, vanilla, orange slices, cranberry, rosemary, mint, basil, and apple slices. Take one to three ingredients listed and experiment. The aroma fills the room and neutralizes odors with ease.

Nashville residents think of air fresheners when they think of eliminating odor. SERVPRO of Belle Meade / West Nashville knows there are easier, safer, and environmentally friendly deodorization methods. Baking soda and simply opening windows are great solutions.  Potpourri and scent simmering rely on fresh, natural, and good-smelling ingredients to deodorize homes. All are worth a try.
