The cold wind and wet ground makes it easier to justify staying inside wrapped up in a blanket with a hot chocolate in hand. Being stuck inside during a cold winter day is sometimes the best way to spend your day off, but being stuck in the house isn’t getting us the fresh air our bodies prefer to breathe in. Throughout the house, we have our HVAC systems that work as the lungs of our home, breathing the air in and out of the home. Keeping this system clean is essential to keeping the air clean that we breathe in daily.

According to the HVAC Inspection, Maintenance and Restoration Association (NADCA), up to 40 pounds of dust is accumulated annually from everyday living activities in a typical 6 room home. This means that throughout the year, our bodies are breathing in those dust particles constantly. The particles pulled into the HVAC system recirculate throughout the house about 5-7 times a day causing that build up in the air ducts. The average American spends about 26 years of the life sleeping! For most people, this includes in their own home, so aside from all of the time just spent in the household, there are at least 26 years that we possibly are breathing in that same air in our homes.

Aside from saving your respiratory system from a harsh beating, there also is the energy savings that clean air ducts provide. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating and cooling is wasted. Just like any other type of blockage, the more objects blocking the airway, the harder the system has to work to move the air successfully throughout the house. This is where the energy is wasted. Having a clean HVAC system provides a good amount of air flow throughout the home without the system having to work as hard. This leads to less energy used and a longer life for the HVAC itself, which in the long run saves you money to pocket away for the fun things.
