SERVPRO of Belle Meade Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Clean in Winter

Are you one of the people that assumes their carpets need less maintenance during winter? Sure, less mud is tracked into the house, but is that all you need to worry about? Unfortunately, even a short and relatively mild winter can still ruin your carpet. The following tips will save you time and money on carpet maintenance this season.

Start by airing out the rooms in your home regularly. It's tempting to close all the windows, turn up the heater, and keep heavy blankets on hand for the chilly days and cold nights! However, your carpets need to be aired regularly to keep them dry and smelling fresh. Try this technique even on days you don't want to leave your cozy bed. Choose the warmest hour of the day and open the windows. Then close the door to that room. This will help the air circulate while keeping cold air contained!

Another great tip is to sprinkle baking soda on your carpet. Afterwards, vacuum the excess powder. This helps to deodorize your carpet and combat humid conditions. As we know, humidity can increase and spread odor-causing bacteria.

Moisture can easily get onto and into your carpets from the humid air, muddy shoes, wet paws or spills of liquid. Have a dry cloth on hand to blot spills as they happen. When moisture sits and builds on a carpet, bacteria is more likely to multiply.

Be frugal and visit appliance stores during holiday sales to buy a durable vacuum cleaner. To simplify cleaning, invest in a vacuum that lifts embedded dirt and leaves your floor dry. Don’t consider this as an excess buy because a top brand vacuum cleaner is invaluable. It is a one-time buy, so consider it an investment.

Buy a small floor rug that doubles as a decorative mat and carpet protector. The obvious solution to dealing with muddy and wet shoe marks is not to bring them inside the house. Visit any home goods store to purchase a an indoor rug with a rough surface. This surface lets you wipe off more particles and moisture from your shoes. If feasible, keep slippers by the rug so your family can switch footwear easily.

If your carpets soak up an excess amount of moisture, such as during a flood, give SERVPRO of Belle Meade a call. Our equipment and training will keep your carpets clean and dry year round!
